"I called this the nicest team in baseball," said DaVanon. "Everyone's overly nice. I can't say anything bad about my teammates this year. I've had a lot of fun." No date had been scheduled yet for the surgery, though DaVanon said they were going to try to get it done as soon as possible. Dr. Phil Kwong, whose patients have included Angels outfielders Garret Anderson and Tim Salmon, will perform the surgery. "He's a guy with the Angels, and I've worked with him in the past, so that's why I chose to go out there," said DaVanon, who is expected to be 100 percent for Spring Training. DaVanon was signed to a one-year contract last season that includes a player option for 2007, which DaVanon sounded almost certain he would exercise. Based on active days on the roster this year, the option for next season is for $1.25 million. With Chris Young the odds on favorite to be the starting center fielder next year, DaVanon could team with Eric Byrnes -- if Byrnes is brought back and Luis Gonzalez is not -- to form a left-field platoon similar to what happened the first part of this year in center. The fact that Carlos Quentin, Young and Byrnes are all right-handed hitters would seem to leave a niche for the switch-hitting DaVanon. "I think, from what I've heard, what the possible plan would be, I think it would be a good fit," he said. "I think it will be a little better fit next year than this year just because Shawn Green being here, he took up a lot of playing time, and he's left-handed, so it's not like they're really going to substitute him for me. Hopefully I'll have a couple of starts here and there." While DaVanon acknowledged that he would like to have played more, he credited manager Bob Melvin with letting him know when he would play. "Bob has been a very good communicator with me, that's so important for a player," he said. Remembering: The D-Backs showed a two-minute video commemorating the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's devastation in the Gulf Coast. Major League Baseball launched a multi-phased relief program after Hurricane Katrina struck last year, collecting more than $7 million in pledges for the American Red Cross. MLB subsequently partnered with Habitat for Humanity International for "Major League Baseball Rebuilds" during which 21 homes have been constructed at build sites, including MLB ballparks, Spring Training locations, the 2005 World Series, the inaugural World Baseball Classic and the 2006 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. This initiative has also generated more than $40 million in earned media exposure for HHI. Still hurting: Shortstop Stephen Drew's right hand is still giving him problems, and he was kept out of the lineup again on Tuesday. "He could play now," Melvin said. "We're just trying to get it better. He's played with it for a while, just hasn't gotten it better, so we'll see if a couple days alleviates some of the problems he's having with it. Potentially, he could play [on Wednesday]. We'll have to see how it's responding." Staying in rotation: Melvin will take advantage of Thursday's off-day to give each of his starters an extra day in between starts. That means Miguel Batista will start on Friday against the Nationals with Livan Hernandez and Brandon Webb following on Saturday and Sunday. Webb is expected to leave the team following Tuesday's game, but he will still be able to start Sunday in Washington. Up next: The D-Backs wrap up the three-game series with the Padres as well as the six-game homestand with a day game on Wednesday. Mike Thompson will take the hill for the Padres against Claudio Vargas at 3:40 MST at Chase Field.
