In NL, it's still a wild, wild West

Arizona Diamondbacks (47-43)
With the exception of Milwaukee, the young Diamondbacks were the biggest
surprise in the league as they stayed near the top in baseball's toughest
division despite a very young roster.
Overall grade: A
The Diamondbacks rely on strong pitching first and foremost. The offense is
still a work in progress and, like most youthful groups, capable of impressive
production one night and very little the next. This is still a very young team
whose best days are ahead, even if they are clearly ahead of the curve in 2007.
Gold stars:
Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb had another fine first half. All-Star closer
Jose Valverde converted 26 of his first 29 save opportunities. Left fielder
Eric Byrnes and second baseman Orlando Hudson put up All-Star caliber numbers.
Needs improvement:
Increased production throughout the lineup, especially the slugging, would help
immensely. The bullpen had more wins than any team in the NL (16) through 81
games, but the workload on the arms could come into play in the second half.
GM homework assignment:
If upgrades can be found on the offensive side, the Diamondbacks should
seriously consider it as long as it doesn't cost any of their young corps
players.
