五個代表人物
Lyle Overbay, 1B
Things didn't go exactly as planned for Overbay in 2003. It all started well
enough, as he broke camp as the starting first baseman and hit .293. After
hitting .245 in May, he bounced back up to .309 in June. In July, Overbay's
production and playing time dropped and he was eventually sent down near the
end of the month. He hit .286 with a .419 OBP while down in Tucson before
getting called back up in September, when he hit .296 in 27 at-bats. Overbay
finished with a .276 average in 254 at-bats, but only drove in 28 runs. With
the Richie Sexson trade, he'll now get to show the Brewers he deserves to play
every day.
Scott Hairston, 2B
The 2003 season was a bit frustrating for Hairston. A year after a breakout
season where he hit 22 homers and drove in 98 runs across two levels, Hairston
was able only to amass 337 at-bats because of some back problems. He made up
for that somewhat by hitting .360 with four homers in the Arizona Fall League.
With Junior Spivey dealt to Milwaukee, Hairston could get a shot at a big
league job (he was added to the 40-man roster), though some time in Triple-A
might be beneficial.
John Patterson, RHP
After pitching well for the D-Backs down the stretch, it seemed a pretty fair
bet that Patterson would land in Arizona's rotation to start 2003. Instead,
he ended up making the trip from Phoenix to Tucson on a regular basis. While in
Triple-A, he pitched well, going 10-5 with a 2.63 ERA in 18 starts. In the big
leagues, it was more of a mixed bag. In eight starts spread out over the season's
first three months, Patterson had a 6.91 ERA. But when he came up in September
and pitched out of the bullpen, he was more effective, with a 3.38 ERA in 13.1
innings of relief work. Patterson will be 26 in January and, with Curt
Schilling gone, could work his way back into the D-Backs' rotation plans.
Mike Gosling, LHP
Mike Gosling, meet adversity. Adversity, Mike Gosling. After breezing through
his pro debut with Double-A El Paso to the tune of 14-5, 3.13 in 2002, Gosling
hit a nice-sized bump in making the move to Triple-A. The lefty out of Stanford
went 9-12 with a 5.61 ERA as PCL hitters hit .330 against him. He did have an
effective stretch in June and July, posting a 3.59 ERA over 62.2 IP. He's only 22,
so he has plenty of time to try to improve on his 89/56 K/BB ratio.
Chad Tracy, 3B
There may be little left for Tracy to prove at the minor league level. By
hitting .324 with Tucson, his career average actually dropped to .333.
He did set career highs in homers (10) and RBIs (80), while only striking out
52 times (against 41 walks) all season. The 23-year-old Tracy also improved
defensively at third, committing 20 errors in 125 games (he made 26 in 113 games
during the 2002 season). With no one necessarily standing in his way in Arizona,
Tracy could get a long look next spring.
灰姑娘傳奇
Lyle Overbay, 1B
Overbay will now have to complete the Cinderella Story in Wisconsin, but the
fact that a guy who slipped to the 18th round because scouts couldn't project
him at any position made it to the big leagues at all is a pretty neat story.
Even though things didn't work out with the D-Backs, Overbay has hit .342 in
his minor league career and should be given every opportunity to have a happy
ending in Milwaukee.
2003 選秀回顧
1. Conor Jackson, OF
It's a terrible thing when a player struggles in making a position switch.
Case in point: Jackson. Moving from third to the outfield, the 19th overall
pick of the draft merely set a Northwest League record with 35 doubles and
led the league with 60 RBIs. He did all of this in just 68 games and 257 at-bats,
earning MVP honors for his efforts.
2. Carlos Quentin, OF
Quentin impressed many by playing through the College World Series with a bad
elbow that made him grimace every time he tried to throw. It required Tommy
John surgery that kept him from making his pro debut after being the 29th pick
at the end of the first round.
