ESPN.com's Buster Olney (via Twitter) reports that veteran infielder Jamey
Carroll has signed a two-year deal with Los Angeles, pending the results of a
physical. According to a follow-up tweet from Olney, the deal is worth just
under $4MM with incentives (Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports specified the
contract's value as $3.85MM). Carroll was drawing a lot of interest this
winter, but Olney tweeted earlier today that Carroll had narrowed his choices
down to the Dodgers and Athletics and would probably have a final decision made
by tonight.
Carroll hit.276/.355/.340 in 358 plate appearances with Cleveland last season,
playing mostly as a second baseman but also seeing significant time at third
base and in the outfield. His versatility makes him particularly attractive to
the Dodgers, since they have a number of free agent infielders (Orlando Hudson,
Mark Loretta, Ronnie Belliard and Juan Castro) and thus Carroll would fill any
number of holes on either the bench or even in the starting lineup should Blake
DeWitt struggle as the everyday second baseman.
