Fellaini a star of the future, says Moyes
October 30, 2008
Everton manager David Moyes hailed rejuvenated midfielder Marouane Fellaini
after his third goal in four games secured a much-needed win at struggling
Bolton Wanderers.
The towering Belgian midfielder, 20, arrived at Goodison Park from Standard
Liege in a club-record £15million deal just minutes before the transfer
window closed in September.
He took time to adapt to the demands of English football but on Wednesday
night provided further evidence of his qualities to give the Toffees their
first win in nine games.
Moyes said: "I think we've signed an up-and-coming star of the future. If you
ask anybody in Belgium, they will tell you exactly what they think of
Marouane.
"He's doing well in a lot of ways, carrying us along with his goals when we
should be helping him along, so we need to give him a lot of credit just now.
"Hopefully the centre-forwards, and Tim Cahill, can now get their fair share
of goals as well."
The Toffees' record buy followed his point-saving equaliser during Saturday's
draw against Manchester United by nodding home in the last minute from a
Steven Pienaar cross.
Yet Moyes admitted his men showed precious little quality during a largely
forgettable encounter.
He added: "I didn't see the goal coming because it was a game littered with
mistakes.
"I even thought when Fellaini headed it that it was going to bounce out. But
he's done it again."
Bolton manager Gary Megson suffered fierce verbal abuse from a section of
supporters during Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Tottenham and this latest setback
will put him under further scrutiny.
More significantly, defeat leaves Bolton second from bottom in the Premier
League and having failed to score in four of their last five matches.
His men were booed off at the final whistle, and Megson said: "That wasn't
unexpected to be perfectly honest with you.
"We've played 10 games, we've got eight points and we're obviously in trouble.
"We've got to start winning games. That's the sixth game we've not managed to
score and that will always cause you problems.
"When the opportunities come along we haven't taken them and that's always
going to put you in a position where you are struggling.
"We spoke about it in the dressing room where everyone has to stay together,
which they are, but I'm preaching to the converted.
"Everyone has to stay together - regardless of what they see, hear or read."
