[FAPL] Preview: Everton vs Chelsea
Key men missing for Everton
Updated: February 9, 2010, 4:25 PM UK
Everton are without Marouane Fellaini and Steven Pienaar for their home clash
against Barclays Premier League leaders Chelsea.
Fellaini is out with an ankle injury sustained in a tackle with Sotirios
Kyrgiakos in the Merseyside derby defeat at Liverpool on Saturday.
Pienaar is suspended following his sending off in the same match.
Mikel Arteta, who replaced Fellaini at Anfield, came through unscathed and
could start but Phil Neville, Jack Rodwell and John Heitinga are other
midfield options.
Everton boss David Moyes is still anxiously awaiting news on the fitness of
key midfielder Fellaini.
The Belgium international suffered an ankle injury in a controversial
challenge with Kyrgiakos.
It is feared the 22-year-old could be out for a few weeks - and he has
definitely been ruled out of the clash with Chelsea - but Everton are still
to learn the full extent of the problem.
Moyes said: "He was due to see a specialist in London but the train he was
due to travel down on was cancelled, so he's missed his appointment time.
He's booked in now for Thursday.
"But he's got a really bad ankle. I was really surprised - it was like an
elephant's ankle, it was that bad.
"The boy has got a bad-looking injury but until the specialist sees it we
can't make any kind of decision.
"He has been integral part of how we have played in recent weeks and he will
be a miss.''
Captain John Terry has recovered from the minor dead leg he collected in the
victory over Arsenal and will play.
But Chelsea have a slight doubt over midfielder Deco ahead of their trip to
Merseyside.
Deco is struggling with a knee injury and may miss out. Michael Essien
(knee), Jose Bosingwa (knee) and Juliano Belletti (knee) are all sidelined.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti has defended his decision to keep John Terry as
captain of Chelsea.
Terry, who is alleged to have had an affair with the former girlfriend of
Wayne Bridge, lost his England captaincy on Friday to Rio Ferdinand following
a meeting with national team boss Fabio Capello.
But Ancelotti has backed Terry to continue as captain of the west London club.
Ancelotti said in an interview to Italian newspaper La Repubblica: "(Terry)
has maintained the captaincy because it's not my role to monitor the private
life of my players, unless this affects their performances.
"For myself and for the club, he is a great captain, a serious professional,
a leader and a player who has great closeness to this club, because he grew
up in the Chelsea Academy.''
