News: The Diamondbacks placed closer J.J. Putz on the 15-day disabled on
Friday due to elbow tendinitis. Sam Demel was activated from the DL to take
his spot on the roster. Putz has gone 21 for 25 in save chances this season
with a 3.12 ERA. David Hernandez is expected to see save opportunities while
Putz is out.
Analysis: Putz posted a 6.17 ERA in June and recently saw a decrease in his
velocity. This injury explains that and now the Diamondbacks will be without
their closer for at least a couple of weeks. General manager Kevin Towers
said that he is "hopeful" the 34-year-old will be able to return following
the All-Star break, so keep an eye on his status going forward. Hernandez
could be a viable stopgap in deeper mixed leagues so consider picking him up.
Fantasy owners should clear up a DL spot for Putz as he should be considered
a viable option in most mixed leagues, when healthy.
