Biography
Mendieta was 19 when he moved from Castellon in the second
division to Valencia CF.His progress at the club was so
spectacular that he quickly stood out in the Valencia squad.
His good work with the team bore fruit in the end and this
Basque began to blossom rapidly, first under the gaze of
Claudio Ranieri and then at the hands of Hector Cuper.Both
these managers made Valencia a very ambitious team and stand
out for the success they brought to the club during their tenures.
Playing at the top of his game, Mendieta did not go unnoticed
in the rest of Europe and at the start of season 2001-2002,
Lazio showed their faith in him by investing in a multimillion
pound deal. However, Lady Luck did not travel to Italy with
Mendieta and Van Gaal made him a priority for Barca 2002-2003.
In the end, Mendieta fought to come to Barca and has arrived at
our Club on loan.
Position
An attacking midfielder, he stands out for his team spirit but
he is also capable of moments of sublime skill. He has a terrific
shot and goes more for accuracy than power.He is also a specialist
from the penalty spot.
His versatility and leadership qualities on the pitch, thanks to
his experience, are other characteristics which made Van Gaal
think that getting him was of utmost importance. The Barcelona
manager hopes to recover the Mendieta we all know after his
unfortunate spell at Lazio.
