Mark Van Bommel arrived in Barcelona on Thursday ahead of his official presentation on Friday. He spoke exclusively to fcbarcelona.com and described his delight at joining the Club as well as revealing exactly what he hopes to achieve in this new stage of his professional career. What decided you to sign for Barca? "The way they play and the mutual understanding with Rijkaard were important. In addition, I wanted to choose a club that gave me a good feeling, and that's the case". What influence did Philip Cocu and Gio Van Bronckhorst have on your decision? "Obviously I've spoken quite a lot to Philip about Barcelona. However, I have to say that's not the most important reason for my decision, but it always helps". What do you know about the Club and the team? "Everyone in Holland knows Barca very well. A lot of Dutch players have played here and the majority have been pretty successful. Also, 5 or 6 players have come from PSV Eindhoven to Barca, such as Romario and Ronaldo, and theyve all done very well. I also know that they won the European Cup in 1992 and that this was the most important title in their history. In Holland, when you say Barca, everyone knows what you're talking about". Do you see this new stage in your career as a challenge or as an opportunity? "Both. It's a challenge because I can demonstrate that I'm capable of playing in other competitions and it's an opportunity to show the world what I am. It'll be my first experience abroad and it won't be easy, but I've come here to win". What do you think you can bring to the team? "I'll try and play the same way as I have in PSV over the last few years and I hope to bring success to the team". Have you spoken to Frank Rijkaard yet? "When you speak, you get a feeling. Firstly, with the Club and then with the coach, it was a good feeling, and that's great." You got to the semi-finals of the Champions League with PSV. Is it your aim to win this competition with Barca? "It's the objective of every player to win the Champions League and especially if you're with Barca. With PSV we got to the semi-finals and we had a great chance to reach the final but we were unlucky. I hope to win it with Barca but it won't be easy because there are quite a lot of powerful teams in Europe". There's always been a close relationship between Barca and Dutch football. Why's that do you think? "I think it's because Barca likes to attack, just as in Holland, and play good football.
