Portugal stars fighting fit
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pauleta, Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Maniche and Deco are all in fine fettle
according to Portugal team doctor Nuno Campos. In fact, according to the
physician's comments in Marienfeld, Germany, Luis Felipe Scolari's men are in
better shape than they were before their UEFA EURO 2004 campaign.
According to team spokesmen and medical staff, the slight knee injury that
striker Pauleta sustained after scoring a hat-trick in the 27 May win over the
Cape Verde Islands, was nothing more than a short-lived scare.
Pauleta, Portugal's all-time top scorer, is a key part of a squad almost
completely in tip-top shape and he will be aiming to find the net again when
the EURO 2004 finalists open their Germany 2006 account against Group D rivals
Angola in Cologne.
"The medical analysis of the team has gone very well and no players are in any
trouble or harbouring any worrying injuries," said Dr Campos. "The training
sessions are getting tougher and the players are all responding well and
looking to be prepared for the first match."
Dr Campos added that the level of fitness in the Portuguese camp far exceeded
that which he witnessed on the eve of the EURO 2004 competition two summers
ago. "After the medical examinations it seems the majority of the team is in
better shape than before the European Championship, and this is a good sign."
Two exceptions to the rosy prognosis were Benfica striker Nuno Gomes,
Pauleta's likely back-up, and Fulham midfielder Luis Boa Morte who joined up
with the team late. Both are currently undergoing their own separate training
regimes in an attempt to catch up with the rest of the squad ahead of their
all-important opener on 11 June.
● Fans out in force
Portuguese and German fans alike were invited to view the team's fitness work
at first hand as the Selecao held an open training session on Monday
afternoon. With over 12,000 spectators packing themselves into the team's
practice ground, the afternoon had more the feeling of a cup final than a mere
preparatory training session as supporters applauded the players' every move.
The scenes at the training pitch were merely an extension of the carnival
atmosphere produced when the players arrived at the Munster/Osnabruck Airport
on Sunday afternoon. In addition to the throngs that turned out to greet them,
the final miles of their coach ride to the team hotel turned into a virtual
motorcade parade as supporters trailed the bus on motorbikes and in cars,
waving Portuguese flags with pride.
Just six days before facing Angola, these shows of support can only help the
mood of Scolari and his players as they prepare to try and match, or even
better, the semi-final appearance Eusebio and Co achieved in England in 1966
– the only other time Portugal have participated in a FIFA World Cup on
European soil.
