Benfica made a delayed debut – the first round fixture against Belenenses
postponed due to the 'Mateus Affair' – to the 2006-7 league in the worst
possible way as Boavista humiliated the Encarnados in their northern redoubt.
Nuno Gomes, Manu and Petit all saw red in a game that was fraught with
emotion.
At least the Lisbon Aguias have the solace of knowing that Boavista put on a
sterling show for their fans. The 'Axadrezados' (literally 'checked ones', the
nickname referring to their chess board shirts) went roaring towards goal for
the moment the whistle (not golden) left the ref's lips. Their new Coach
Petrovic has made a point of drilling into his men that the Bessa must see
wins – and what a win it was.
Kaz almost opened the account in the twelfth minute, a Luisao error – the
Brazilian looking clumsy last night – being repaired by a great save from
Quim. Benfica's only replies were long distance efforts that showed an
inoperative Rui Costa lacking ideas and Nuno Gomes letting exasperation get
the better of him as he returned to his old haunt again.
Benfica's other Brazilian full-back, Anderson (ex-Corinthians) also showed he
needs to raise his game after failing to cut a fairly straightforward ball
that Linz (36 min) controlled with his chest after Ze Manuel shook off
Anderson, the Austrian banging the ball past a well-beaten Quim.
Linz and Lucas almost made it three nil before the break, but Fernando Santos'
one unquestionably intelligent move has been to put Quim back as first-choice
keeper and the Portuguese goalie pulled off two acrobatic saves.
Mario Silva almost made the best of another Luisao fluff after the break, and
Benfica responded – curiously enough – via the errant centre-backs; both
Anderson and Luisao coming close to nabbing an equaliser that could have
changed the course of the match.
Any embryonic reaction bit the dust as Nuno Gomes saw a second yellow in the
67th minute – it could have been a straight red as he launched a 'voadora'
(flying kick) at a Boavista player's kneecap that masqueraded as a tackle –
and went off looking annoyed and shamed at the same time.
As if the deficit on the scoreboard wasn't enough, Benfica were down to ten
men and Boavista drew strength from their rivals’'weakness. Once again it
was the back line that folded; Leo being danced over by Grzelak before the
Axadrezado whipped a cross in and Linz (75 min) headed the ball (with a little
luck) past Quim.
The Benfica players were horrified at the scoreline and their own inability
to make a comeback, although Manu almost gave a hand by getting himself sent
off. Petit joined him and Nuno Gomes after arguing with the ref. Boavista
twisted the knife in the already suppurating Benfica wound as Kaz (90 min)
blasted in the third local goal. The alarm bells are sounding at Luz.

Benfica: Petit Apologises For Poor Performance
10/09/2006 13.58
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Midfielder Petit, one of the three Encarnados who were sent off in last
night's disastrous Bwin Liga debut against Boavista up in the northerners'
Bessa stadium, has apologised to disappointed Benfiquistas.
The number 6 showed gentlemanly class in his acceptance of a deserved defeat.
"The most important thing is to congratulate Boavista and to ask our fans for
forgiveness", he began.
"Today [Saturday] we weren't up to the greatness that Benfica deserves. Now we
have to ensure that we're back at our best for Wednesday's Champions League
match against FC Copenhagen", added Petit.
"That match is vital as far as our aspirations in the Champions League are
concerned and we are certain that the match against Boavista has given us a
timely warning. We are better than that and will prove it on the pitch", he
concluded.
糟透了……囧~
