Antonio Lopez is excited by the signing of Simao Sabrosa as the Portuguese
star was met by a huge crowd of journalists and fans as he arrived in Madrid
to sign for Atletico.
Los Colchoneros ended their quest to capture the former Barca player from
Benfica this week after agreeing a deal worth around €20m plus two players.
"I am very pleased to be joining Atletico and I hope to be able to achieve
great things," the 27-year-old said.
The news has lifted the club that has been starved of success for over a
decade and the exit of Fernando Torres now appear to be a distant memory.
Simao has also given his new team-mates confidence and Antonio Lopez
admitted that the speedy wideman will be a welcome addition to the squad.
"He can contribute a great deal with his wing play, forward runs and crosses,
as well with a few goals we hope," Lopez said.
"We will welcome him like every other new play; with open arms."
Simao's arrival signalled the end of Martin Petrov's time at the club as he
left to join to Manchester City, but Lopez was not prepared to compare the
two players.
"I do not think that you can compare one player to another like that," he
continued.
"Martin played the way he knew and Simao will bring his own style, but I do
not think that you can say one is worse or better."
Atletico have had another busy summer in the transfer market as they look to
create a successful blend under coach Javier Aguirre.
Before Simao's move, the club had already brought in Luis Garcia from
Liverpool, Diego Forlan from Villarreal, Raul Garcia from Osasuna Cleber
Santana from Santos, Diego Costa from Braga and Christian Abbiati from AC
Milan.

Simao Driven By Atletico Ambition

Simao Sabrosa has revealed that the ambition that Atletico have was the key
reason behind his decision to move from Benfica to El Calderón.
The Portuguese winger was presented by los Colchoneros on Friday after he
completed a €20m transfer and is aiming high with his new team.
"I can promise that I am going to work very hard to help the club and take it
back to the top, where it belongs" he said.
"Atletico should be among the top three clubs and winning trophies. I am
going to do everything I can to make that possible.
"I like ambitious clubs and the project here is very exciting.
"This club has a great history and have won many things and the plan they
have shown me is very good."
Atleti have already brought in Diego Forlan, Luis Garcia, Raul Garcia, Cleber
Santana, Diego Costa and Christian Abbiati this summer and Simao is impressed.
"They are also building a very strong squad to achieve those aims," he
continued.
"I remember very well when Atletico were at the top and challenging for
everything. That is why I am here.
"I do not know all the players here, only some of them, but we have time to
prepare before the start of the season.
"This year we have to aim for the top, because the club deserves it."
