Amelie Mauresmo
PHILADELPHIA - Amelie Mauresmo has developed a tendency for sticking around
until the last ball has been struck.
For the second straight year, the Frenchwoman has shown that her late-season
form could be the best in the game - this time helping to lead her to a
second straight title on Sunday at the Advanta Championships in Philadelphia.
Last year, Mauresmo played well into the month of November - winning the
title in Philadelphia, reaching the finals at the WTA Tour Championships and
then leading France to the Fed Cup title, defeating Russia and then the
United States to take the Cup.
And this year has already shown it will not be much different for the French
player, who is also in pursuit of the world No.1 ranking, a spot she held for
five weeks a short time ago.
After winning her fourth title of the year at Linz two weeks ago, Mauresmo
arrived in Philadelphia to defend her title, prepare for the Championships
and move closer to catching current world No.1 Lindsay Davenport. And after
leaving with the Philly title under her belt, it was clear Mauresmo
accomplished the first two of those objectives.
She easily defeated Iveta Benesova in the second round, withheld a challenge
from No.5 seed Venus Williams in the quarters, got a walkover from No.3 Maria
Sharapova in the semifinals before staging a nice comeback against No.6 seed
Vera Zvonareva in the finals.
Mauresmo said that she's happy to be repeating last year's efforts in
Philadelphia and now sets her sights on again reaching the final at the
Championships.
"The consistency is what I've been looking for the past few years," Mauresmo
said. "And I feel I have that now."
