No regrets for Mauresmo
December 3, 2004
PARIS (Ticker) - France's Amelie Mauresmo claims she has no regrets about withd
rawing from last week's Federation Cup event, in which Russia prevented her cou
ntry from retaining its crown.
Mauresmo, who took over the world's number one ranking in September but fell to
second behind American Lindsay Davenport while she recovered from a left adduc
tor strain, opted to take a rest rather than accept French captain Guy Forget's
invitation to participate.
France, which won the event in 2003, ousted Spain in the semifinals without Mau
resmo, but a team that included Tatiana Golovin, Nathalie Dechy and Emilie Loit
could not handle the Russians, falling 3-2 in Moscow on Sunday.
"I made a decision for which I take responsibility," she said. "I watched the g
ames on television, but we would not necessarily have won the cup if I had been
there."
Despite incurring the ire of Forget, Mauresmo said that her decision was made b
ecause of a scheduling conflict and that she needed the time off to rest and lo
ok towards improvement.
"The past season was the best of my career so far and I want the 2005 campaign
to be even better," said Mauresmo, who won five of her 15 career singles titles
this past season. "In 2005 the Fed Cup schedule will be modified and the final
played in September, which means there won't be any problem anymore."
Stating that she has always been proud of playing for her native country, Maure
smo expressed her desire to be a member of next year's team.
"I hope I will be called up again," she said.
Mauresmo will resume top-level tennis action at the Australian Open in January.
