Men's No.6 seed Andy Roddick has endured a scare in his first-round
match at Australian Open 2007, eventually defeating French wildcard
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-7(18) 7-6(2) 6-3 6-3.
Roddick, who came into the Melbourne Park tournament off the back of
a win against world No.1 Roger Federer in the AAMI Classic at Kooyong,
endured a much-tougher than expected first-up task against the 21-year-old.
Tsonga, making his first appearance in the main draw at an Australian
Open, gained the upper hand after edging out the 2003 US Open champion
in a 38-point first-set tie-breaker.
He continued to pressure Roddick, breaking his serve once in the second,
but also conceding his own. The American prevailed with relative ease
in the tie-breaker and the momentum of the match switched.
A single break was enough to give Roddick a two-sets-to-one advantage
after a 31-minute third set. The 2003 and 2005 semifinalist then hit
his stride, rifling 12 winners past Tsonga a breaking him twice in a
dominant fourth set.
