Hingis Defeats Johansson in a Duel of Deft Shotmaking

Facing a less mature version of her own cerebral style-of-play, No. 16
seed Martina Hingis was outsmarted more than once in her first-round
victory over 112-ranked Frenchwoman Mathilde Johansson.
The 22-year-old Johansson was a picture of calm in her debut on Arthur
Ashe Statdium while challenging the 1997 US Open champion and five-time
Slam singles title winner. When Hingis was out of position, Johansson
let her know by placing 17 winners in her main draw debut. But Hingis,
26, had the more reliable serve and won the critical points.
In the first set, Hingis capitalized on all three of her break opportunities
to shut out Johansson, 6-0.
In the second set, Johansson had a break point in the first game, but
failed to convert. Both players held serve until the eighth game, where
Hingis pulled ahead 5-3 with a well-placed winner behind Johansson who
was at the net. Hingis won the next game without dropping a point on her
own serve.The result was a lopsided score that did not reflect the
competitiveness of the individual points.
In the second round, Hingis faces No. 106-ranked qualifier Pauline
Parmentier of France.
