Mahut beats Bogdanovic in four-hour thriller
Tuesday, 15 June 2010
In a match that will live long in the memories of all who saw it, Alex
Bogdanovic came up agonisingly short in the final analysis, losing an epic
tie 3-6, 6-3, 24-22 to Nicolas Mahut in the second round of qualifying.
Though the British No.2 can certainly take heart both from his performance
and also from the support of the crowd, this exit will merely give more grist
to the mill of his critics after eight years of first round exits at
Wimbledon.
Despite only being on the fringes of the top 150, Frenchman Mahut has played
some of the best tennis of his career on grass, reaching the third round of
Wimbledon in 2006 and making a final appearance against Andy Roddick at
Queen's in 2007, a tournament where he also had a good run last week, winning
three qualifiers and a first round match before taking a set off Marin Cilic
in a second-round defeat.
Bogdanovic was the first to take control of the match, winning the first set
6-3, serving well and looking to be aggressive at the baseline in order to
dictate the rallies. The British No.2 seemed to run out of ideas midway
through the second set however, and succumbed to the Frenchman currently
ranked 15th in his home nation, who managed to reduce the errors that had
been coming from his backhand all too frequently and mount a comeback.
What then followed will go down in the record-books. The sun decided to
re-emerge for good, and a very healthy crowd enjoyed the best weather of the
tournament so far as afternoon refused to turn into evening and the match
stretched into a third, then a fourth hour. Break chances were few and far
between, but when Bogdanovic double-faulted to go 0-40 down at 10-10, it
looked as of the writing was on the wall for the lefty. To the delight of the
fans, he dug deep and won five points in a row, serving big particularly from
the deuce court.
Both players then settled back into a rhythm on service, but the deciding
break finally came in the 45th game, to the chagrin of the hundreds of
supporters who were basking in the late evening sunshine on the bank
alongside the court. Mahut served out to take the match and and now faces
another lefty and No.13 seed Stefan Koubek for a place in the main draw. For
Bogdanovic meanwhile, the long wait continues...
