Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry is the recipient of the “2013-14
Seasonlong Kia Community Assist Award” in recognition of his numerous
charitable contributions, fundraising and remarkable generosity in the Bay
Area and across the globe, the NBA announced today. The award recognizes the
NBA player who best reflects the passion that the league and its players have
for giving back to their communities.
With this honor, Curry’s charity of choice, ThanksUSA, will receive $25,000
from the NBA and Kia. ThanksUSA is a 501(c)(3) public charity that is
committed to providing college, technical and vocational school need-based
scholarships for the children and spouses of active-duty US military
personnel. Since 2010, Curry has served as the national spokesperson for
ThanksUSA and hosts an annual golf tournament in San Francisco in support of
the organization.
“Giving back to the community and those in need is something that has always
been close to my heart and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to touch
people’s lives and hopefully impact them in a positive way,” said Curry. “
I also want to thank the NBA and Kia for donating $25,000 to ThanksUSA to
further help their mission of providing education for family members of
active-duty US military personnel.”
Curry was selected as the “2013-14 Seasonlong Kia Community Assist Award”
winner by a distinguished panel of NBA judges and fans. Fan voting took
place from April 21 – May 5 on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
In addition to his work with ThanksUSA, Curry assisted in the distribution of
38,000 bed nets in Tanzania during the 2013 offseason with the Nothing But
Nets campaign. In conjunction with his second annual “Three for Three
Challenge,” Curry helped raise money for Nothing But Nets and the fight
against malaria in Africa by donating three life-saving bed nets for every
three-pointer he made during the 2013-14 season. In addition, Curry also
hosted a four day overnight camp for 120 youth; launched the inaugural Splash
Brothers Basketball Clinic with Warriors guard Klay Thompson; wished patients
at Children’s Hospital a speedy recovery; helped dedicate a Reading &
Learning Center in Beijing, China; fulfilled the dreams of a Make-a-Wish
youth; fed over 400 Bay Area families in need with Feed The Children; hosted
a Get Fit Hoops & Health Clinic during NBA FIT Live Healthy Week for over 250
youth; and participated in this year’s 2014 NBA Cares Day of Service in New
Orleans, LA. In addition, at each Warriors home game during the regular
season, Curry donated 15 tickets to underserved youth and made it a point to
connect with fans.
Kia Motors has been an NBA Cares partner since 2010 and a partner of the
Golden State Warriors since the 2011-12 season. In addition to the Seasonlong
Kia Community Assist Award, the league presents the Kia Community Assist
Award monthly throughout the season to recognize players for their charitable
efforts, which Curry won in January.
