Mavs Open Season With a Walk Off

Kuo Hui Lo picked a great time to notch his first hit as a High Desert
Maverick. With the game tied and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth
inning, Lo lined an 0-2 pitch to center field to cap a three-run rally and
defeated Lancaster 9-8 Thursday night in Adelanto.
The Mavs trailed 8-6 heading into the inning. Greg Halman drew a leadoff walk
against Josh Papelbon (0-1). After Carlos Triunfel grounded out, Johan
Limonta knocked a double to scored Halman and pull the Mavs within one. Chris
Minaker followed with a single, and Carlos Peguero came through with an RBI
single to tie the game. Lo then sent a soft liner to center to score
pinch-runner Ogui Diaz.
The Mavs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth with RBI hits by Limonta and
Peguero. Making his Maverick debut, Peguero went 3-for-5 with two doubles and
four RBIs.
After getting their first run in the fifth, the JetHawks took control with a
six-run sixth inning to go up 7-3. Jon Still highlighted the inning with a
two-run homer off Mavs starter Kyle Parker.
The Mavs chipped into the lead with one run in the sixth, seventh, and eighth
innings. Lancaster pushed across what was thought to be an insurance run in
the ninth off Mavs reliever Joe Kantakevich (1-0).
Both teams' starters went five innings, and neither figured in the decision.
Parker gave up four runs (two earned) on four hits. Travis Beazley allowed
three runs on five hits. In each of his four previous starts against the Mavs
Beazley had earned a win.
Travis Scott hit the lone home run the Mavs. It was a solo shot in the eighth
inning to pull the Mavs within 7-6.
After failing to win consecutive games against the JetHawks in 2007, the Mavs
will look to pull off the feat Friday night. Ricky Orta will start for the
Mavs. He'll be opposed by Adam Mills.
