Graf, Edberg, Cheney enshrined in Tennis Hall of Fame July 11, 2004 NEWPORT, Rhode Island (Ticker) - Germany's Steffi Graf and Sweden's Stefan Edberg, who combined for 149 singles titles and 28 Grand Slam triumphs, were enshrined Sunday in the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The other member of the Class of 2004 was Dorothy "Dodo" Cheney, the first American to win the Australian National Championship in 1938. Graf and Edberg were elected in the Recent Player category, while Cheney was elected as a Master Player. Each inductee needed a 75 percent vote for induction. Graf was presented in an emotional tribute by her husband, future Hall of Famer Andre Agassi. "Not that this occasion isn't emotional enough," Graf said. "The best part of the journey is I ran into you. I'll be forever grateful for that." Graf won an astounding 107 WTA singles titles, which trails only Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert in the Open Era, and 11 doubles crowns. She captured 22 Grand Slam singles titles - four Australian Open Championships, six French Opens, seven Wimbledon championships and five U.S. Open titles. In 1995, she became the only player - male or female - to win each of the four major singles titles at least 4 times. Three years later, Graf won all four majors in the same calendar year. The 34-year-old spent a total of 331 weeks as the world's top-ranked player, including a streak of 186 consecutive weeks. Edberg won 41 singles and 18 doubles titles. He captured six grand slam titles, winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open twice each. Edberg spent 72 weeks as the world's No. 1 player. He played on 13 Davis Cup teams for Sweden and was part of a championship squad four times. Edberg also won a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics, when tennis was a demonstration sport. Cheney was a member of victorious Wightman Cup teams from 1937-39. In Grand Slam events, she reached the mixed doubles final at the French Open and Wimbledon in 1946. She competed in tennis events for eight decades and won more than 20 Senior Grand Slam titles. Cheney, who was presented by former world No. 1 John McEnroe, is the daughter of 1956 Hall of Famer May Sutton Bundy. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.112.216.120
