Before the dust settled on the Grizzlies' 112-88 loss to the Dallas Mavericks Saturday night in American Airlines Center, point guard Jason Williams unleashed a verbal tirade directed at assistant coach Brendan Brown. The incident erupted with 6:18 left in the third quarter moments after head coach Hubie Brown made a wholesale substitution for the starters. Williams, standing and pointing, constantly referred to Brown using expletives before teammates convinced him to sit. Hubie Brown then intervened, speaking with Williams for several minutes while play continued on the court. The elder Brown confirmed that the issue wasn't because Williams came out of the game. Apparently, Williams's complaint had to do with play calling. From the bench, Brendan Brown routinely instructs the Grizzlies on which offensive sets to use. It's a role that Hubie Brown, Brendan's father, has bestowed upon assistants throughout his career and one that had been widely accepted. Perhaps until now. "He's entitled to an opinion," Hubie Brown said of Williams. "Everything is whether or not something is valid. It's been addressed." Dallas led by 13 points at the time of the incident. The Grizzlies' starting unit had been outscored 12-3 to start the third. That group, which made 13 of 38 shots, were also outscored 27-11 to end the second period. Williams wasn't available for comment after the game. His teammates downplayed what took place on the bench. "It's just a lot of guys wanting to win," center Lorenzen Wright said. "When things aren't going your way, a competitor is going to have things to say." But there was no sugarcoating the Grizzlies' offensive woes. The Griz shot just 37 percent in falling to 0-3 on the season. "There are some issues we have to get through," said Griz forward Pau Gasol, who led the team with 18 points but turned the ball over four times. "We have to find ourselves again. Otherwise, it's going to be harder for us to win games. This game is about team. It's about chemistry. It's about playing together. It's about being on the same page. Hopefully, we'll show that in the next game." Brown said that James Posey is struggling because of a troublesome left foot injury and a lack of conditioning. Bonzi Wells, who supplanted Mike Miller as the starting shooting guard, found another reason. "We're not the league's best-kept secret anymore," Wells said. "Everyone knows about us. Everyone knows our offense and what we like to do. We just need to go back to the drawing board and find a way to attack defenses." The Griz suffered 20-point losses only twice last season. The Mavericks biggest lead was 26 points in a game that mercifully ended for the Griz after two hours, 17 minutes. After taking a 35-24 lead in the first quarter, the Griz were outscored 88-53. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 219.128.39.54
