Grizzlies Use Press to Chill Canadian National Team, 102-81
Long Beach, California, July 7, 2003 – DeMarr Johnson turned the Memphis
Grizzlies’ first game of summer league play into his own personal
“Welcome back to the NBA party.”
Johnson scored a game-high 25 points, and the Grizzlies used a frenetic
pressing defense to force 39 turnovers enroute to a 102-81 win over the
Canadian National Team to open play in the Los Angeles Summer Pro-Am
League on Monday night at the Long Beach Pyramid on the campus of
California-State University-Long Beach. Memphis continues league play
on Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Johnson, a 6-9 shooting guard who last played in the NBA with the Atlanta
Hawks in the 2001-02 season, shook off the rust with just two points
in the first half to explode for 18 points in the third period including
a pair of three-pointers. Rookie Troy Bell (selected 16th overall in
the 2003 NBA Draft) added 19 points and a game-high four steals, rookie
forward Theron Smith followed with 18 points and a team-high six rebounds
and three-year veteran guard Earl Watson posted a double-double with a
game-high 10 assists and 15 points. Rowan Barrett of Canada shared
game-high scoring honors with 25 points.
Rookie Dahntay Jones (20th overall in Draft) did not dress for the game
due to a lower left leg injury occurring during a summer camp workout.
Jones is listed as day-to-day.
“I was a little nervous in the first half. I did not expect to go into
the game so early, but I learned tonight that I’ve got to be ready,”
said Johnson. “I hadn’t been in a game situation in a long time. It
felt good to play and shoot well (in the third quarter), like I am used
to performing.”
Defensively, Memphis forced Canada to commit 25 turnovers in the first
half and scored 30 points off Canadian gifts to lead 44-36 at halftime.
The Grizzlies never trailed after the game’s opening minutes and led by
as many as 12 points in first half and more than 20 points in the second.
However, Memphis allowed 25 turnovers in the first half and 36 total
turnovers to help Canada rally to within four points near halftime and
seven points in the third quarter, 55-48. Then Memphis used a 7-0 run
to push the margin back to 12 points and never looked back.
“I thought our defense was the key to the win. We forced 39 turnovers
with 25 in the first half,” said Grizzlies assistant coach Lionel Hollins,
who is serving as head coach during summer league play. “We also had
a lot of turnovers in the first half, but we did a better job of handling
the ball in the second half.”
After a sluggish start with five turnovers in the first four minutes of
play, the Grizzlies responded by using a pressing defense to force 14
Canadian turnovers resulting in a 20-5 scoring run to end the first quarter.
Memphis scored 18 points off Canadian turnovers including nine points
each from Bell and Smith of Ball State in the quarter. Canada won the
battle of the boards over Memphis with a 43-35 rebound margin.
The Grizzlies will play nine-scheduled games over 13 days, July 7-19.
The Grizzlies’ schedule continues with matchups against the Los Angeles
Clippers, Tuesday at 9:30 p.m.; Golden State Warriors, Thursday, 9:30 p.m.;
Dallas Mavericks, Friday at 7:15 p.m.; Denver Nuggets, Sunday, 7:15 p.m.;
Toronto Raptors, July 15; Seattle SuperSonics, July 16; Houston Rockets,
July 17 and Sonics, July 19. All times are Central. NBA TV will air live
coverage of Grizzlies games against the Warriors and the Mavericks on
Thursday.
