Daniela Hantuchova has long been a popular figure at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, and she came close to winning the tournament in 2002 when she conceded the final to Kim Clijsters in three sets. "I think it’s one of my most favourite tournaments because it feels like being home there, especially because it’s so close to my country, and I speak a bit of German," said Hantuchova earlier this year. "The people are so nice to me, especially after I made the final. I was really close to winning that one. It was a great match.” Perhaps that is why she played so well against Meghann Shaughnessy, beating the American 6-4, 6-0. Although the first set score was close, it disguises how dominant the Slovak was. She gave up only five points on her serve in the set, and held five break points before making a breakthrough at 5-5 when Shaughnessy sent a forehand long. After serving out for the first set, Hantuchova immediately stamped her authority on the second, breaking in the opening game with possibly the best point of the match, a double-handed backhand winner that landed right in the corner. Hantuchova had been putting pressure on Shaughnessy’s serve throughout the match with some fine returns, and it paid off handsomely as the American increasingly struggled to put any first serves into play. A double-fault gave Hantuchova another break for 3-0, and Shaughnessy’s fifth double-fault left Hantuchova serving for the match. "I missed a few opportunities early in the first set, but I just kept going for my shots and tried to stay calm and believe in what I was doing," said Hantuchova. "She serves hard, but I felt I was in control and it was just a matter of time. "I was expecting a tough match, because definitely Meghann is very tough to play, especially on a court like this. It’s so fast, and with her serve it always tough to break her. I always thought it was going to be very close and I’m really glad the way it went in the second set and I got on top of her." It was a day of mixed fortunes for the German players bidding to win their way through to the main draw. In the final round of qualifying, Kathrin Woerle was beaten 7-5, 6-3 by Czech Zuzana Ondraskova, but Stephanie Gehrlein pulled off a fine 6-4, 6-4 victory over another Czech, Michaela Pastikova. Her reward is a first round meeting with 2004 French Open champion and this week’s number eight seed, Anastasia Myskina of Russia. Two more qualifiers came through extremely difficult matches and will face each other for the right to meet second seed Kim Clijsters. Eleni Daniilidou of Greece overcame yet another Czech, Kveta Peschke, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-2), and Croatia’s Karolina Sprem beat Tszvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5. In the main draw, Germany’s Julia Schruff fell 7-5, 6-2 to recent U.S. Open doubles runner-up Flavia Pennetta of Italy, and another German, Sandra Kloesel, fell 6-2, 6-2 to Marat Safin’s sister, Dinara Safina. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 211.74.100.210
