Another top player, Daniela Hantuchova, has been confirmed to play the 2006 ASB Classic from January 2-7 in Auckland. Ranked No.19 in the world she is regarded as one of the WTA Tour's glamour players who has the capacity to be a big challenger for the tournament title. Aged 22, she has been ranked as high as No.5 in the world back in January 2003, a position she had previously reached in doubles play. Standing 1.81m in height she has a powerful serve and an impressive Grand Slam record. She reached the third round of all four Grand Slam tournaments this year, and has made the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open (both 2002) and the Australian Open in 2003. She has shared four mixed Grand Slam titles. During the past year she has made the quarter-finals or higher at 10 WTA events, but she still has only one career title, won at Indian Wells in 2002. Her first big result this year was at Doha where she reached the semis with wins over Maggie Maleeva, Elena Bovina and Conchita Martinez before losing to Maria Sharapova. At Dubai, she beat Alicia Molik and Elena Likhovtseva but lost to Serena Williams in the quarters. There were also a semi-final finishes at Cincinnati and Filderstadt and quarters at Tokyo, Stanford, New Haven, Luxembourg and Linz. Her one finals appearance in 2005 came at the Tier II event in Los Angeles where she had wins over Sharapova and Elena Dementieva before bowing out to Kim Clijsters. Hantuchova has won six doubles titles, two of which have been this year “ Birmingham (with Ai Sugiyama) and Filderstadt (with Anastasia Myskina). She was also a doubles semifinalist at Roland Garros with Chanda Rubin in 2003. Tournament director Richard Palmer said: "Daniela is a player who has a star quality about her." "She is athletic and is identified as a player who can beat anyone on her day." "To have someone of Daniela's ability in the tournament adds significant value to the Classic and will be a challenge to all players in the field including Nadia Petrova who is in the top 10." "Daniela has shown this year that she is getting close to her best again and has beaten many of the world's top players."
