ENQVIST (SWE) : 6-4 6-2 5-7 6-4 [昨日news] A Fired-Up Hewitt Secures 2-0 Lead For Australia World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt turned on the gas in the fourth set, winning the last ten points of the match to defeat Thomas Enqvist 64 62 57 64 and put Australia ahead 2-0 at the end of the first day of the 2003 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas quarterfinal tie against Sweden. “I played well from the start then it turned into a dog fight,” said Hewitt. “Thomas played as well as anyone can play but I raised the bar. The last two games were two of the best I’ve ever played in my career.” “I’m more disappointed than surprised,” said Enqvist about the loss. “I didn’t really play as well as I needed to beat Lleyton. He played too well, too steady. That’s why he is No. 1 in the world.” Hewitt looked pretty cool stepping onto the court to face Enqvist, perhaps because he held a 5-1 career head-to-head advantage over Enqvist or was it the luxury of a lead thanks to Mark Philippoussis, who defeated Jonas Bjorkman in straight sets in the opening singles at the Baltiska Hallen in Malmo. “It was a good thing to have in your mind,” said Hewitt who congratulated his teammate for an excellent performance. “Flip destroyed Jonas, took away his weapons. Thomas came out knowing they were 1-0 down and I knew we were up.” His captain, John Fitzgerald, echoed his thoughts, saying, “Mark played almost faultless tennis. He is playing as well as he has in three years. If he stays healthy, he is going to give the world of tennis a bit of a shake.” His opponent, wearing the modified Mohawk hairdo that had graced Britain’s David Beckham in last year’s soccer World Cup, is a very talented player but one who has never entirely fulfilled his promise. This year, his 4-9 singles record includes only one major highlight – a victory over the hottest player of this, and many, years, Andre Agassi in the opening round at Scottsdale. Enqvist has good reason to remember Malmo fondly. The site of Sweden's 1996 Davis Cup Final loss to France, Enqvist won two critical matches including what may be the finest Davis Cup match of his career over Cedric Pioline to set up a live fifth rubber. Enqvist came back from two sets down that day to defeat the Frenchman. Although he was not broken in the early going on Friday, Enqvist was really let down by his serve, getting fewer than 20 percent in.In the fifth game, the Swede saved the first break point of the match with a big ace then served two more to get out of trouble but the tide was beginning to turn Australia’s way. Hewitt, wearing Australia’s green and gold, held serve for 3-3 then broke Enqvist, who had already committed 11 unforced errors, to take the lead in the set. Enqvist’s first service percentage was improving as the match went on but the 29-year-old from Stockholm could do nothing in the first set to stop the Hewitt charge. With his parents, Glynn and Cherilyn, sister Jaslyn and girfriend, Belgian superstar Kim Clijsters, looking on, Hewitt closed out the first set 64. (啦啦隊的聲勢真浩大..:p) Swift and strong and full of flash, Australia’s No. 1 looked set to turn in his 19th Davis Cup singles victory. At the change of ends, drumbeats set the pace for rows of Swedish cheerleaders waving blue and yellow pompoms raising the already loud ambience of the stadium to deafening. The Australian fanatics responded loudly, singing and shouting to exhort their player onto victory but, as befits these two sporting nations, the conditions were always fair. Hewitt dominated at the beginning of the second set, taking a 3-0 lead, but made a few errors to start the fourth game, getting behind on his serve 0-30. Hewitt saved a break point with a solid serve then netted a forehand to give Enqvist another chance. Two big points gave Hewitt an opportunity to go up 4-0 but the Swede at the net brought it back to deuce. Hewitt did not let his next opportunity to win the game go astray and finally held for a 4-0 lead. Enqvist won his first game of the set with four solid points then Hewitt’s momentary lapse of attention vanished and he held serve for 5-1. Strangely, a look at the body language of Australian captain John Fitzgerald and not at the scoreboard would have indicated that the Aussies were in trouble but not so. Although Hewitt squandered two set points on the Enqvist serve, the outcome of the set was never in doubt as he held serve to win the second set 62. Australia would need only one more set to score a perfect sweep of the day but this was not to be. At the start of the third set, Hewitt held serve with some difficulty. Enqvist finally got his chance, breaking Hewitt for the first time in the match to take a 4-2 lead but the Aussie returned the favour, breaking right away.Hewitt was inconsistent in his next service game but rallied to keep the set even at 4-4. Serving at 5-6, Hewitt again struggled and this time was unable to salvage the game or the set as Enqvist, with a firm forehand volley crosscourt, converted his second set point taking the third set 75. With a leap over the net worthy of Rudolf Nureyev, Enqvist ran to the bench to be greeted by his captain, Mats Wilander. The momentum didn’t last long, though, as the scrappy Hewitt broke Enqvist who double faulted to lose the first game of the fourth set. The Aussie also struggled with his serve but got himself out of a tough spot with aggressive play. Enqvist held serve and then got back to even when Hewitt double faulted at breakpoint. With tensions high, both players held serve but not easily. At 4-all, Enqvist had a let down giving Hewitt three break point chances. Hewitt only needed one, scrambling and hitting a backhand near-winner that Enqvist put into the net. Serving for it, the Aussie played another brilliant game to win the match and give Australia a 2-0 lead in the tie. “We realised before today that we had to play at the highest level to beat Lleyton and Mark,” said the Swedish captain Wilander. “Mark played unbelievably well and Lleyton has played well all year in every match. Thomas hits the ball better but that’s not all you have to do to beat Lleyton.” The Aussies might have subdued the team but they did not subdue the spirit of the Swedish players or fans whose love of Davis Cup is legendary and whose reputation as the comeback kids in this competition is well known, having survived a 0-2 deficit five times in history. The choice of players for tomorrow’s doubles may keep both captains occupied this evening. Fitzgerald has a wealth of possibility in all four of his players; it seems certain that Jonas Bjorkman will be Wilander’s main man, but he will no doubt ponder long and hard his selection to partner Bjorkman. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 140.112.228.230
