Hewitt raging against dying of the light
Hewitt
Hewitt raging against dying of the light

LONDON: Lleyton Hewitt vowed to go on playing tennis for as long as his
patched-up body allows after coming within a whisker of a major upset at
Wimbledon on Thursday.
The 30-year-old Australian veteran took a two-set lead against fifth seed
Robin Soderling before running out of steam as the Swede fought back to win
a pulsating five-setter 6-7 (5/7), 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4.
It was a bitterly disappointing second round loss for Hewitt, the former
world number one who triumphed at Wimbledon in 2002.
Yet the pugnacious right-hander from Adelaide was able to reflect on his
best performance for several months which have been plagued by injuries
and poor results in major tournaments.
Hewitt, who has struggled with foot and hip injuries in recent years,
said he was in no mood to call time on his career.
"I love competing in these events," Hewitt said. "You know, you're retired
for a long time once you're retired. I hear that from a lot of great athletes.
"For me, as long as my body's close to a hundred percent, I want to go
out there and compete. I still feel like I can obviously give these top
guys as much trouble as anyone out there," he added.
"I don't know 100 percent why I'm still motivated. But as long as I'm
prepared to do the hard work and go through all the pain and mentally
up and down after surgeries and still get in the gym and do all the hard
slog, then you know something's right, I guess."
Hewitt is also unfazed by the fact that his world ranking has slumped
to a 13-year low of 130 in recent weeks.
"My ranking, for me, it's not an issue," he said. "I'll get wild cards
into a certain amount of tournaments that I'll want to play anyway.
"As I've always said, your ranking takes care of itself. Once you're
actually in the tournament, if I can play at that level consistently,
then my ranking's the furthest thing from my mind."
Hewitt's commitment to representing Australia in the Davis Cup is also
unshakeable, even though it means a gruelling trip to China immediately
after Wimbledon before heading to the United States for the hardcourt
season.
He is also looking forward to the prospect of returning to Wimbledon
next year for the 2012 Olympics.
"But anytime to play for your country it's a great honour," he said.
