Seems you've been able to deal with Clijsters's power in the first set, then collapsed. What happened? MARTINA HINGIS: That's a nice analysis (smiling). Well, she started off well. I was down 3 0 in like no time. Actually, 2 1, don't know. 3 0, it was. It would have been better if I had made one of the three games before, just stay close with her. It was always kind of running from behind. Yeah, I mean, playing her only in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam, it's not going to teach me how, you know, play someone like her. But hopefully I get to play her more and be in a better condition next time. Q. In your return, quarterfinals of a Grand Slam are not enough, but the other girls also have a high level. Are you going to fight Wimbledon, US Open? The tennis fans are happy that you are here, doesn't matter you lost today. MARTINA HINGIS: Well, thank you. Something positive out of today (smiling). No, I mean, definitely I'm very pleased to have made the quarterfinals again in a Grand Slam. Obviously, like you said, you always want more. It's more disappointing that I had a rough schedule the last three, four days. Just like, you know, didn't have enough time to recuperate. That's probably one thing I just have to really get used to. That's what you can get better at the next one, Wimbledon. I hope for better times over there (smiling). Q. Do you think the main problem today, except Kim, was your serve, and especially your second serve? MARTINA HINGIS: Well, it was just the whole game. I was a little flat. I was a little tired. I was just a little late. I didn't have the energy going I had in the first three matches. Even like the last couple days, it was tough coming from a night over, finishing yesterday. You're always intense. Those days, they were long days here at Roland Garros. Today definitely, I mean, she's not an opponent you can just walk on court and think she's going to give it to you. You just have to be full on. If you're not, you're going to lose. That's what happened today. She was just better. Q. Pulling out of the mixed doubles, was there anything beyond the fact you wanted rest? You didn't have a physical or illness problem? MARTINA HINGIS: I mean, it would have been impossible. I mean, just, you know, for different reasons. It was just the scheduling and everything was just really tough. I was thinking that maybe a little bit more rest would help me to go and be ready into today. Q. How would you characterize Kim's game in a thumbnail sketch? MARTINA HINGIS: Oh, she's just very you know, she's very powerful, very physically strong from difficult situations. Although, somehow I felt like I wasn't playing the greatest tennis which I had in the first few days and last week, that I was still kind of staying with her in the game. That's probably for me right now the tournament is over, I can take a lot of positives out of it. In a way, this is the sport, this is tennis. You can't think that, Okay, whatever, what would have happened if? It just didn't. Just today she was better prepared. You know, her game is on a very high level. You have to be ready to be pushing her. Otherwise, if you let her dictate, she's too good. Q. What do you have to work more on to go a bit further in a Grand Slam? MARTINA HINGIS: I don't know. Sometimes it's a good question. I mean, if I could answer it, I'd probably be doing it (laughter). No, I really you know, today I just didn't feel a hundred percent physically, from the last three days. That's the only thing. When I played the first matches, I was just hoping to stay healthy. That's probably the biggest reason, part of the reason why it's difficult to stay focused and intense over two weeks in a Grand Slam. Always something can happen. You know, just have to get out there and play your matches day by day. Q. Is it because it's longer than a usual tournament? MARTINA HINGIS: In a way, I like it because you have a day in between, you kind of can rest. I really wasn't given the rest in the last three days. I mean, you can't change the weather. You can't change those things. Hopefully next time I'll be better prepared. Q. With a loss like this, if your health is good, does it inspire you to want to play two, three, four more times to try to win this tournament? MARTINA HINGIS: Definitely. I mean, I'm not going to give up the just like that. I've played some really good tennis here in the first week. I mean, I can't just be disappointed because losing in the quarterfinals. I mean, like I said, I can take a lot of good things from here. The good thing about it is in three weeks' time there is already Wimbledon coming up. Just take the positives, take the best out of here, put the new force, new energy into the next one. Q. You could say we're approaching the midpoint of the season. Could you give a mid season report? Are you happy, thrilled being back on the tour? How is your game trending? MARTINA HINGIS: You know, when I play like I did the first matches, winning Rome, all these things happen, I had some great matches in the last six months. You know, it definitely was worthwhile coming back and be playing, just having some great emotions and moments back on court. I never regret one minute of coming back. That's probably the most positive thing which happened. Of course, you have ups and downs, highs and lows, which is normal. Win or loss is very close. Like yesterday, I was one of the happiest days. The next day you go out there, you lose, you know, you just kind of have to dig deep and keep going. Q. You settled back very quickly into playing on hard courts. You did well in Australia. You've had a good clay court season. Is it going to be more difficult settling back into grass? MARTINA HINGIS: I don't know. I mean, I really it's been a while since I stood on a grass court. I don't know. I mean, I think you can erase a lot of deficits which I have with speed and all these things, I never really had a problem in the past, so I don't really see why I should be having problems now. It's pretty much the same for everybody. Nobody really practices on grass. I don't know. I'm looking forward to it, actually. I don't know what to expect. Usually the first day, second day I practice on grass I feel very good. Hopefully it will stay like that. Q. You've played both Nicole and Venus recently. Are you surprised by the result? Can you also talk about Nicole's game, her prospects. MARTINA HINGIS: She's a very talented player. I played her in Rome. You know, it was a very tough first set. She's young, very young. With 17 year, you recover very fast, even she lost the first set in both matches against Amélie and today against Venus. She still has more to give. Where, us, we're a little older, 26, you don't recover as fast any more. There the freshness, being young, really comes into play. It's definitely an advantage. On the other hand, she's also got nothing to lose, so she just really goes for it. Somehow, yeah, makes you feel young again when you see someone like that who is playing so well. Yeah, she's definitely got potential. She's only 17. Q. What do you like in her game? MARTINA HINGIS: She really speeds it up. She comes in, moves forward all the time, tries to attack. Big first serve. Not really a weakness. Moves well for her height. Q. How do you prepare for Wimbledon? MARTINA HINGIS: I don't know. I'll have a couple days' rest at this point. Q. Are you going to Eastbourne? MARTINA HINGIS: I really can't answer this question at this point. Q. Are you going to play doubles again? MARTINA HINGIS: I don't think so (smiling). Q. Why? MARTINA HINGIS: Well, I think otherwise I wouldn't have it's just, I think I'm just really happy to be playing singles and taking time with that. I think, you know, I'm not 17 any more. Just really focus on the singles. If I didn't believe that I had a chance to win a Grand Slam or get far in a Grand Slam, maybe then I'd choose to play doubles or maybe making it far into singles. After this six months, I feel like I really play good tennis in singles, and I can keep going in the tournaments. I just really only want to focus on that. Q. Don't you think that would help for the singles? MARTINA HINGIS: If it could help? No, I think practice at this point is more important and just really recover and plan the day like you need to for just the singles. Doubles, sometimes the schedule, you can't always influence everything. Even at this tournament, when it rains a couple days, it just really messes up the whole schedule. You can't play two matches like every day. It's difficult. Q. Can you imagine that clay is not Kim's best surface. Also, your pick? MARTINA HINGIS: You always hope for the opponent who beat you to make it all the way. It's hard. I wish her all the best, keep going. It's hard to pick. Q. Can you imagine that she says clay is not her best surface. MARTINA HINGIS: She won US Open last year. That's probably why she feel like that's her most favorite surface. I don't know. You have to ask her. Q. You've talked a fair amount about how great it is to be back, how much fun you're having. Have you had any moments when something happened, you said, "That's why I left the game"? MARTINA HINGIS: Oh, yeah, no kidding. It happened a few times. But then it's like the desire and just really to be playing, feeling good, winning matches that overcomes those things where you feel like, okay, you're exhausted, tired, really down. You have to get back to the basics. That's when you feel like, okay, this is not what I enjoyed when I was still playing like every day, the discipline. Like during these 10 days I was here, just really, you know, always have to watch out what you do, how much you don't want to overdo it. Just always those two days I need to rest and recover and then, you know, just recharge batteries, then you overcome all these things. No, definitely a lot more joyful days than when you sit back and don't do anything. Q. Do you miss something from those days, retirement? MARTINA HINGIS: It gets boring when you don't have your days planned, so that's why I came back (laughter). Not the only reason. I think, you know, every person needs something in life that really pushes you and makes you want to do something. When you feel like you have chances in life, you recover, mentally, all these advantages you have when you mature and get older make a different kind of experiences, then you know what you want. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 59.117.11.150
