Allen Iverson regaining 'A.I.' form

After failing to score 20 points in 10 straight games, Allen Iverson has scored
20, 28 and a Pistons-best 38 the past three against Charlotte, Washington
and the Utah Jazz, respectively.
It appears the guard is beginning to feel more comfortable with his role since
the addition of point guard Rodney Stuckey into the starting lineup Dec. 9.
Since then, the Pistons are 3-2.
Coach Michael Curry said playing alongside Stuckey has allowed Iverson to
revert to his old mind-set, when he was a shoot-first shooting guard in
Philadelphia.
"We're no longer asking him, for 20 minutes a night, to run the team,"
Curry said before Friday's 120-114 double-overtime loss to the Jazz. "Maybe
during stretches for 4 to 6 minutes in the first half, and for 4 to 6 minutes
in the second half, we may ask him to run the team, but not for longer
stretches as we were when he first got here.
"Because of that, I think he's able to go more into his scoring mode and
keep more of his scoring mentality."
Iverson's best asset, perhaps, is his ability to take over a game. On Friday,
he repeatedly drove to the basket when the offense stagnated, and he was able
to finish lay-ups and pull-up jumpers, draw fouls or find open teammates.
That helped the Pistons bring a 70-69 lead into the fourth quarter, despite
the fact that Stuckey had five points and four fouls, and Rasheed Wallace
had three points and three fouls.
"I still like the ability to run some pick-and-rolls with Rasheed down the
stretch, to iso Tay (Prince) or run Rip (Hamilton) off the pick," Curry
said. "All those things are playing to our key guys' strengths, and I like
being able to do that.
"I'm comfortable winning games either way, but sometimes the defense is really
good, and it takes that individual talent to be able to break down the defense.
and he's one of those guys."
Another reason Curry inserted Stuckey into the starting lineup was his
on-the-ball defensive capabilities -- given his 6-foot-5 height and quickness
-- and ability to harass opposing point guards.
But Sunday at Atlanta, Stuckey will get a test against star shooting guard
Joe Johnson, who is 6-7 and a versatile scorer. Curry wants Iverson to guard
point guard Mike Bibby, as Johnson is a mismatch physically for Iverson.
