Ray Boone, a member of the 1948 world champion Indians, had one of the most
difficult assignments in Cleveland baseball history. He succeeded Hall of
Famer Lou Boudreau at shortstop.
Ray Boone是1948年世界大賽冠軍隊的成員。他要接下名人堂球員Lou Boudreau游擊手

Boone died Sunday day at age 81 following a long illness in his hometown of
San Diego. Boone's wife, Pat, said he had been hospitalized for six months
following complications from surgery.

"It's a blessing," she said. "He had a great life."
Boone was the patriarch of a three-generation baseball family, including son
Bob and grandsons Bret and Aaron.

Boone's death was announced at Fenway Park, where the Boston Red Sox were
playing the New York Yankees in the AL championship series, and a moment of
silence was held before Game 4. Exactly one year earlier, Aaron, now a member
of the Indians, homered to beat the Red Sox in Game 7 and sent the Yankees
to the World Series.

Years ago, Boone knew he was in an impossible situation trying to follow
the immensely popular Boudreau, who was the idol of Indians fans.

would find it rough."

Boone first joined the Indians in August 1948, caddying for Boudreau when he
was hurt. He batted five times that season and got one more at-bat in the
World Series.

Player-manager Boudreau tried to phase himself out of shortstop by playing
more and more at third base in 1949, replacing aging Kenny Keltner.

After Boone was installed at short on June 6, 1949, the Indians won nine of
11. Boone was leading the team in hitting at .320. The success did not last.

A Cleveland writer urged Boudreau to return to short. He said the Indians
were practically in a state of rebellion because he was not at his old post.

Once Boudreau was ejected for arguing with an umpire. Boone pinch hit for
him and hit a home run. As he trotted around the bases he thought, "I guess

Boone, who had started out as a catcher for three years in the minors, had
the backing of General Manager Hank GreenBerg. Boone had a strong arm and
could hit but lacked range.

Boone seemed to get a handle on the shortstop job in 1950, when he hit .301
in 109 games. He finally became the fulltime Cleveland shortstop in 1951,
after Boudreau was traded. He played 151 games at the position, but led the
league in errors with 33. He brooded over the mishaps and hit only .233,
with 12 homers.

It was obvious his time with the Indians was limited after the club acquired
shortstop George Strickland in 1952. Strickland was a light hitter but an
excellent fielder.

Boone found himself after being traded to Detroit in an eight-player deal on
June 15, 1953. Pitchers Steve Gromek, Al Aber and Dick Weik accompanied him
to the Tigers for pitchers Art Houtteman and Bill Wight, infielder Owen
Friend and catcher Joe Ginsberg.

Boone was shifted to third base, which carries less pressure, and immediately
started to hit. He finished 1953 with 26 homers, including four grand slams,
114 runs batted in and a .296 batting average.

In 1955, he led the league with 116 RBI while playing only 126 games for the

He later played with the Chicago White Sox, Kansas City and Boston, his
career ending in 1960. Boone wound up with 151 homers and a .275 batting

A funeral for Boone has been scheduled for Friday in suburban El Cajon,
Calif.
他的葬禮將在週五舉行。
