Japan bows to UAE in Kirin Cup
Japan bowed to the United Arab Emirates 1-0 in their second and final game
of the Kirin Cup on Friday night at the National Stadium in Tokyo, going
down to a goal by Haidar Alo Ali in the 69th minute.
With the result, the hosts saw the Emirates and Peru share the title in the
annual round-robin tournament with four points each from 1-1-0 win-draw-loss
records. The Emirates and Peru battled to a scoreless draw on Tuesday at
Toyota Stadium in Aichi Prefecture. Japan, which lost to Peru 1-0 on Sunday,
finished with no points.
Playing the two friendly internationals as warm-ups for its upcoming World
Cup qualifying matches, Japan took control of the game from the start. But
the Boys in Blue struggled to find the net on numerous chances, frustrating
the home fans.
The Emirates, meanwhile, sought scoring chance on counters and eventually
registered a goal in the 69th minute when midfielder Ali latched on to a
ball from midfielder Nawaf Mubarak.
"Our players were tired as they didn't have enough time to rest after our
first game against Peru and they were nervous in front of so many Japanese
fans, but they played better than in the Peru game," UAE coach Jumaa Rabeeh
said. "I think Japan played very well, compared to their performance against
Peru. They just missed many chances."
Japan coach Zico commented: "We were the better side today and lost on a
counterattack. But our players maintained their aggressiveness all the way
through."
It was the first time his side had lost two games in a row since matches
against France and Colombia in the 2003 Confederations Cup.
"I know we are not used to being beaten," said Zico. "But we shouldn't be
tied to those defeats. We'll take off on Sunday, resetting ourselves to
win three points from Bahrain."
The Japan squad will leave on Sunday for Abu Dhabi for a three-day training
camp ahead of the June 3 Bahrain game. They will then move to Bangkok to
meet DPR Korea on June 8.
