Many questions remain in Kingsland, from who the next coach will be to who
will fill out the roster by the time the 2009-10 season begins in six months.
But one thing is certain: On June 25, the Kings are guaranteed to have their
highest draft pick since they took Billy Owens at No. 3 in 1991. And if the
pingpong balls fall their way when the picks are determined May 19 and they
land at No. 1, it would be just the second time in the Sacramento era (Pervis
Ellison, 1989) and fourth time in franchise history (Bob Boozer, 1959, Rod
Hundley, 1957 ) they had the top pick.
After a season in which they set a franchise low for wins (17) and surpassed
the 1989-90 Kings (23-59) as the worst Kings team in the Sacramento era, the
draft offers hope for those who run the team and root for it. Kings
basketball president Geoff Petrie is among them, excited at the prospect of
landing one of the best amateurs available and optimistic the draft can help
expedite the rebuilding.
Petrie sat down with The Bee recently to discuss the draft process. And while
he certainly wasn't going to tip his hand in evaluating individuals, he
shared his thoughts on everything from the way in which this year's
preparation has been different to his philosophies regarding the draft
exercise he so often refers to as an "inexact science."
How has the leadup to the draft been different this year because you
essentially knew the pick would be higher than normal?
As our season went along and our record being what it is now (16-57 at the
time) and where we were earlier … we started to condense our scouting down
(earlier) to concentrate on a fewer number of prospects so we could get more
looks (at players), knowing that our picks are going to be headed to a much
higher part of the draft than we had anticipated and have ever really had in
a long time.
A big part of scouting to me is based on … the theory that when you don't
see something often, you often don't see it. So in that sense, we
concentrated our scouting to a narrower group of players sooner.
What about the sheer mileage for you this season? Have you bounced around
scouting more than in years past to do your homework?
I've been gone a lot. It has all been in the United States. Beyond just the
regular-season games, there's the conference tournaments, the NCAAs
(tournament). And I probably spent more time than ever watching more college
games this year whether I'm here or on the road than I have pro games. I
really think with all the games that are broadcast, college and pro, that
once you've seen somebody three or four or five times in person, more TV
looks (at players) just add to that. It's the same old thing where you're
constantly trying to update your mental database about the pros and cons and
what you like or don't like about individual players.
How formal are you when it comes to looking at players? Are you there with a
notepad? Do you take a voice recorder and speak notes for yourself? Or is it
all in your head?
I make some notes, generally, but my personal view on scouting is based on
what I see. What we do is we build an individual file on all these players
that has statistics, a scouting report, physical history, a biographical
history, just about everything that you can find out, and then you can go
from there.
Is this a universal database in your office? Is it something that everybody
who's on the scouting team has access to? Are guys keeping files on their own?
We have scouting services we also use that provide a lot of data. We have
video services that do an enormous amount of breaking down and statistical
analysis of individual players. It's like a lot of things these days. It's
never going to come down to a lack of information. It's about determining
what information is most important, what's most relevant.
