He hates competition. He hated the thought of relinquishing millions in a contractual buyout, although the New York Knicks would have been tempting and, from the beginning, Sacramento was his desired location. So what this tells the Kings is that Rubio is confused, is still a kid, and they need to be aggressive and alert. You know. As proactive and persistent as wounded T-wolves president David Kahn, but with the backroom panache of the San Antonio Spurs. There's plenty of time to plot. Rubio can bolt Regal Barcelona in two years. Though Geoff Petrie drafted a potential franchise player in Tyreke Evans, the Memphis man-child who has NBA execs salivating over his immense talent, the Kings basketball president can surely share a dance with the mop-haired kid who can lead and, most importantly, who can pass. In two years the Kings will likely still need a point guard, and Rubio probably will still be lagging behind Minnesota rookie Jonny Flynn, still pressing the T-wolves for a trade. Meanwhile, here in Sacramento … can the mayor spare a few dimes? With Francisco García and the chronically injured Beno Udrih already ailing – a knee this month, a torn toenail the next? – the Kings could open training camp with a frightening collection of poor or uninterested passers. Projected starters Kevin Martin, Jason Thompson, Andres Nocioni and Spencer Hawes contributed more turnovers than assists a year ago, with Udrih's 4.7 assists for every 2.16 turnovers almost John Stockton-esque by comparison. Into this scene steps Evans, who averaged 3.9 assists and 3.6 turnovers in his short, sweet season at Memphis. Before injuring his finger in July in the Las Vegas summer league, he was a physically bruising presence, defending and rebounding, and relentlessly attacking the basket. He penetrated and found teammates underneath, but seemed less comfortable facilitating an offense. A natural scorer, his eyes were on the prize – the rim. Point guards by comparison crawl out of the womb with a completely different vision. They see the entire floor, anticipate plays before they develop. "When Dennis Johnson came into the league with us (Seattle), he didn't handle the ball as well as Tyreke," said former NBA coach Paul Silas, asked about the frequent comparisons between Evans and his late former SuperSonics teammate. "But I think DJ's decision-making was better. Can you learn that? It's very tough once you're in the pros. The game moves so fast. I would venture to say Tyreke's more of a two (shooting) guard and, man, I haven't seen anybody get to the basket like he does." But back to the point, to the suspicion that Evans is a lead guard only in an emergency: The Kings should learn what Rubio eats, when he sleeps, what he reads. They should chart his every pass, his every tendency, his every desire. They should get to know the youngster so well that two years from now, if they haven't already acquired someone to deliver the ball to Evans, Martin and Hawes, they should invite Rubio for another visit, another look. "I want to be a really good point guard here in the best league in the world … ," Rubio told The Bee during the first of his two pre-draft visits last June, "so I have to find the team who wants me, who really wants me." Two years.
