New rules limit early practice

CHARLESTON, S.C. —
A new set of rules governing training camp is rendering fear and loathing
obsolete.
There were but a handful of sweat-soaked jerseys when the Knicks finished
practice yesterday morning at the College of Charleston because teams
cannot spend more than three hours per day on the court participating in
basketball activities.
Customary two-a-days must end five days after camp opens. Contact drills and
scrimmages are limited to one session.
"Well, that's collective bargaining," coach Lenny Wilkens said. "I'd rather
be able to have my full three hours in the morning and full three hours in
the afternoon where I could do everything I wanted to do, but this is the
way it is so we'll adjust to it. Here it's mostly classroom sessions, video
sessions, walk-throughs."
The players will be allowed to elevate their heart rates during a 30-minute
window for stretching and warm-ups.
"We're still getting our work in, for sure," Jamal Crawford said.
Clearing the air:
The day after last season ended, Wilkens clearly stated a desire to bring
in a power forward with more athletic ability. He wanted a presence in the
post. The remark didn't sit well with Kurt Thomas.
When the issue was reintroduced yesterday, the coach made a clarification.
"I said that we wanted to upgrade and keep adding to our team," Wilkens
said. "That had nothing to do with Kurt, that's just making the team better.
We had one guy — him — and I wanted to have another guy. Don't read it
wrong."
Anderson plays on:
The feud between Shandon Anderson and Isiah Thomas remains the lone outstanding
issue of camp. Wilkens, though, claimed the awkward relationship will not
affect his decision-making.
"I don't get caught up in all that stuff," Wilkens said. "I'm not going to
treat him any different than anybody else."
Anderson worked yesterday as if nothing were going on. He will eventually
sit down with the coach and discuss the future, barring a buyout of a
contract that has three years and $24 million remaining on it.
"Eventually he's going to talk to everybody one-on-one, but there's no need,
" he said. "We have no bad blood. We go on with business as normal, go out
here and play hard."
