http://tinyurl.com/2fzoj2o Villarreal Will Not Compete In Europa League Regardless Of Copa del Rey Outcome Villarreal will not be playing in next season's Europa League regardless of who wins Wednesday's Copa del Rey final between Sevilla and Atletico Madrid. The Yellow Submarine finished seventh in the Primera Liga, one place off an automatic European spot. However the club believed that they still had an opportunity to take a place in Europe depending on the outcome of the Copa final. They were of the belief that a win for Sevilla in the Copa del Rey final would result in them being granted a place in Europe's second tier competition as the place allotted to the Copa del Rey does not go to the losing finalists if the winners have a European spot secured. UEFA have sent a statement to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) clearing up the matter by stating the potential scenarios of a win for either Atletico or Sevilla. According to Marca, that statement contradicts Villarreal's previously held belief, stating that if Sevilla win the Copa showpiece on Wednesday night, having already booked a place in the UEFA Champions League, their Europa League spot will go to the losing finalist, in this case Atletico Madrid. Atletico will, as Europa League holders, be granted direct access to the group stages of next year's competition whereas the Copa del Rey winners would ordinarily have to enter the final preliminary round of the competition.
