Q&A with Shaq
http://www.suntimes.com/output/basketball/cst-spt-shaq03.html
For superstar center and premier NBA entertainer Shaquille O'Neal, life is
good.
''I'm happy,'' he said. ''I'm playing for a great organization in the Miami
Heat. I'm 324 [pounds]. I got 13 percent body fat, I'm still America's No. 1
sex symbol and I'm running naked on the beach every night.''
So people trespassing the private beach of his estate on Miami's Star Island
had better beware or they will be in for the shock of their lives.
''They say it's hard for a big man to be loved, [but] everybody loves Shaq,''
said Bulls forward Tyson Chandler, to whom O'Neal used to give free tickets to
Los Angeles Lakers games and also invite to his mansion. ''I know I do. He's
a great person with a fantastic sense of humor that's good for the game.''
Scottie Pippen still relishes his time playing with Shaq on the 1996 Olympic
gold medal Dream Team.
''He's a little kid wrapped up in a big man's body,'' Pippen said. ''He's
always been that way. He keeps people around him loose. He's one big, happy
dude.''
But O'Neal, who leads the Heat into the United Center tonight, wasn't very
happy with the Lakers after last season when Kobe Bryant was designated as the
franchise player and Phil Jackson was not re-signed.
''I asked to be traded,'' O'Neal said.
Here are O'Neal's comments on the Lakers and other subjects during an exclusive
interview:
What's it like being a tandem now with Dwyane Wade instead of Kobe Bryant?
Dwyane is the young, flashy Ferrari. I'm the old-school, respected Phantom.
Around the curves, he can do a little bit more than I can. But I'm not coming
here to outdo anybody. I know what it takes to win. And I'm going to pump him
up because I need somebody like him. He's going to get his 24 or 25. I'm going
to get my 20 and I'm going to get my 30 around playoffs. I've never been into
that 'whose team it is.' I could care less.
The mistakes I made with my first two pupils [Anfernee Hardaway and Bryant] I
won't make with him. I won't make them because he's different. He's like me:
bad [man], but he's humble. Those other two had the attitude 'I know I'm the
[stuff]. I'm Mike. I can do whatever I want to do.' He's like 'Thank you' and
'yessir.' He's earned his stripes already.
Really? Dwyane's that good already?
He's the best second-year player I've seen since [Michael] Jordan and Dominique
[Wilkins]. He doesn't have to take 30 bull[bleep] shots to get 20 points like
most of these guys. I love the kid because he's a great player and a great
person. I'm going to promote him all I can, and the league should too because
guys like him are what this league is supposed to be about. He's humble. He
lives a clean life. He's a good family man. He works hard, and he really cares
about getting his teammates involved and making them better. This is his team.
Lakers owner Jerry Buss was quoted Sunday saying he's concerned you may be
upset with him and you won't return his calls. What's your response?
I'm a businessman. I don't take nothing personal. I'm smart enough to know what
was going down before it went down. They told me, 'You get us some extra good
veterans and we'll give you an extension.' So I get Karl Malone and Gary Payton
to cut back on their money and come in. But when me and my people went in to
start talking money, they started stuttering. So Phil called me in and told me
they weren't going to give him or me an extension.
But Buss was quoted as saying he offered you a two-year, $45 million extension.
''Did not. Did not.''
What's you relationship now with Buss?
I never had one and still don't. I couldn't do my job if I did. If he'd call me
upstairs, I'd talk to him.
What's you relationship now with Kobe?
Have you seen my beautiful wife? Well, do you think I give a [expletive]
whether another man likes me or not? A lot of people think you got to like
somebody to work with them. You got to respect them. After practice and games,
I got my own [stuff] to worry about. I can't be concerned with what others are
doing. I'm working on my masters in criminal justice and I got homework to do,
my kids and my wife and the rest of my family to worry about. After that, it's
2 or 3 in the morning, and I got to get some sleep.
Can you be as happy in Miami as you were in the brighter lights of Los Angeles?
Of course. When I was younger, I did everything I wanted to do like rap albums,
movies and parties. Now, I'm older and mature. Me and my wife were already
looking for a piece of property on the water in South Florida. So I got to kill
two birds with one stone. So I got a house in Orlando on the lake and a house
in Miami on the ocean. What more can you ask for?
Have you done enough for the Lakers to retire your jersey despite what went
down?
That's not my decision. But the Lakers have retired several jerseys of players
who won just one championship. So from the championship standpoint, my answer
would be 'yes.' I'm happy to be playing for Pat Riley now because he's an
authority figure who has done things right. If me and Flash [Wade] got into an
argument, Pat would call us in and curse us out. But how many times did
[general manager] Mitch Kupchak call me and Kobe in to iron things out? None.
He always let Phil handle it.
What's your take on the Pacers-Pistons brawl?
It was unfortunate, but I knew Mr. Stern would set a precedent. I don't think
I would have put myself in a position to get a cup thrown at me. But I wish the
media would be just as hard on the people who threw the cups and chairs as it
is on the players who went into the stands. The DA is talking about charging
the players. What about the fans who incited things? How much money will they
lose?
What's your take on the ''Desperate Housewives'' promo featuring NFL star
Terrell Owens and TV actress Nicollette Sheridan that aired on ''Monday Night
Football''?
As a man, that [stuff] was funny. These execs and other critics act like they
have never seen [butt] and [breasts]. Sex and reality TV are hot today. I
thought the skit was pretty funny. Football is a man's beer-drinking sport, and
those girls are hot.
If you were president of the United States, what are the first things you would
do?
Teachers and soldiers would get raises. First-year military guys would get
$80,000 a year for five years and then get a raise to $100,000. All officers
would be making $225,000 tax-free.
