Despite an injury-riddled season, "Guga" won his 17th career title and reached
another final...Finished out of Top 10 for first time since 1998...Underwent
arthroscopic right hip surgery on Feb. 26 in Nashville, Tenn. and returned two
months later for European clay court circuit...Opened campaign with a five-set
opening round loss to Boutter at Australian Open, then one month later lost in
1st RD to Calleri in Buenos Aires...Following week underwent surgery...Upon his
return in Mallorca, defeated Davydenko and M. Norman before losing to eventual
champion Gaudio in QF...Then lost in 2nd RD at TMS Roma (l. to Montanes) and QF

winning streak snapped in 4th RD by eventual champion Costa...Did not play on

Began playing tennis at age six with his parents...Fluent in Portuguese,
Spanish and English...After winning his third Roland Garros title in 2001,
drew a heart in the clay to show his appreciation for crowd's support...Then
during trophy ceremony, addressed crowd in French...His older brother, Rafael
(born Oct. 28, 1973), looks after his business matters...Mother, Alice, is
president of Institute Guga Kuerten...Younger brother, Guilherme (born Nov.
3, 1979), is mentally handicapped and Kuerten gives trophies to him...Father,
Aldo, died in 1985 while umpiring a junior match and he says, "I dedicate my
whole life for him. He was an important person for me."...Enjoys playing
guitar, which reminds him of his father...An avid surfer, he was presented a
custom surfboard by ATP after finishing 2000 as No. 1 player...Favorite
surfing destination is Biarritz, Costa Rica...Sports idols include his
countrymen the late Ayrton Senna and Pele...Named ATP Player of Year in 2000
...Won Roland Garros juniors doubles title (w/Lapentti) and runner-up at the
Orange Bowl 18s (l. to Lapentti) in '94...Has a 24-11 career Davis Cup record

Nations Educational Scientific & Cultural Organization) 2001 youth and

Brazilian postage stamp commemorated in his honor with Paris' Eifel
Tower in background...Coached by Larri Passos (since 1989) and gave
his coach a 1998 Mercedes-Benz CLK 230 that came with title at Mercedes
Cup in Stuttgart.
