Calleri Wins First ATP Title
Argentina's Agustin Calleri won his first ATP title on Saturday by defeating
countryman Mariano Zabaleta in the finals of the Abierto Mexicano de Tenis
Telefonica Movistar in Acapulco. Calleri, a 26-year-old who resides in Buenos
Aires, captured his first singles crown with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 win in Mexico.
Calleri, playing in Acapulco for the first time, did not drop a set before
reaching the final. He defeated countryman and No. 3 seed Gaston Gaudio in
the second round and No. 7 Marcelo Rios in the quarterfinals before blowing
past Felix Mantilla in the semifinals. The Argentine is now 1-1 in ATP finals,
after losing to Nicolas Massu in the 2002 Buenos Aires final.
Zabaleta, who turned 25 on Friday, falls to 1-4 in ATP finals. His lone ATP
title came in 1998 when he won the Bogota title. Zabaleta is 10-5 on the year
and was playing in his first final since reaching the Amsterdam championship
