Press Conference with AUGUSTIN CALLERI
Coria vs. Calleri 6:3, 6:4, 6:4 18.05.2003
Q: Congratulations and commiseration with losing, but is this the best week of
your career despite having lost the final?
A: Yes, it's the most important week not only for tennis, but for everything
for me. I mean, I got to the final, I lost it. I had my tactics that I had
discussed with my coach, but Guillermo just played too well today. He didn't
make any unforced errors. That's tennis: Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
Q: Do you make a connections between four Argentinians reaching the semi-
finals and the general elections?
A: Well, if it happens again that there are going to be four Argentinian
players in the semi-final it will be great. I think we just proved that we are
a powerful tennis nation. Now, Guillermo Coria will be No. 7and Nalbandian
will be 6; we have two players in the top 10. Once again, we proved that we
are a powerful nation.
Yesterday, I got a call from the elected Argentinian vice president, so I had
the chance to talk to him. I followed the elections in Argentina so it was
nice to be able to speak to the vice president.
Q: What did he say?
A: I think it was important that we were doing so well in one of the sports.
Because of all the things that happen in Argentina lately, of course, the bad
economic situation and also the flood in Sante Fe which cause a lot of deaths.
So, it was important that we had some success so we could help the people
forget the bad moments.
Q: Can you give an idea of what your strategy was against him?
A: Yes, I knew that I had to put pressure on his forehand, because his
backhand is much stronger. But he basically didn't make any unforced errors.
So, I had this tactics, but I was a little bit erratic and I just couldn't do
it. That was the key of the match. I couldn't apply my tactics.
Q: Why? Were you tired after a long tournament?
A: Yes. I was a little bit tired and also I have a little bit of a cold. And
also maybe the nerves and the pressure of a final played their part. But,
I'm happy that now I have two days off. And I'm going to Paris tomorrow and I
will start practising for Roland Garros on Wednesday.
Q: You said the other day that you weren't aware of too many good juniors in
Argentina. Does this surprise you?
A: Like I said yesterday, talking about the junior player situation in
Argentina, it's two factors: Of course, the economic situation which doesn't
help because there are no sponsors that can help the players and at the same
time the federation doesn't have a scheme to help those junior players. So,
it's a double problem.
Q: Do you think this week's success may encourage them to further the scheme
in the future?
A: Well, I hope that this can help, but apart from the success that we had
this week, it should be the first priority for a federation to work well and
help the players. It shouldn't depend on the success of the players right now.
It should be the no. 1 thing, always.
Q: How much contact do you actually have with your federation?
A: Well, it's normal. We have a normal relationship. People know that I
haven't been treated fairly, but I just want to deal with them in a
professional and normal way.
Q: You said that you thank your parents for the help you got, but are there
some other top 50 Argentinian players who are there, are they in the same
position as you are? That they are there because of the help of their parents
and not of the federation and sponsors?
A: Well, I already said yesterday that I think that Coria and Nalbandian did
get help from the federation, but everybody else has to thank their parents
for the support to make it to the top.
