Press Conference with GUILLERMO CORIA
Coria vs. Calleri 6:3, 6:4, 6:4 18.05.2003
Q: That must feel pretty satisfactory to win your first Masters title?
A: Yes, it's unbelievable, it feels like a dream. I don't want to wake up from
this dream. I just want to share this dream with all the people that have been
with me, my coach, my physical trainer, my family, my girlfriend, I just want
to share this moment with them.
Q: What did you do since last night to make sure that you recovered from the
cramps?
A: Because I knew if I would get nervous, maybe I wouldn't have been able to
finish the match, because I would have had the cramps. Yesterday, my physical
trainer told me it was unbelievable what I did, because I a lot of cramps and
I was still able to finish the match. So today I just wanted to stay calm and
not think about that.
Q: Did you spend more time preparing mentally?
A: No, their was no difference really. When I beat Philippoussis in the
quarter finals it was under an hour, and I knew that it would be a big chance
that I play Gaudio in the semis, so I had a lot of time to prepare for that.
Every match is different, but I have the same amount of time to prepare
mentally for a match.
Q: Can you tell us what it means for Argentina to have another Masters Series
Winner?
A: Yes, it's very important for tennis in Argentina of course. The economic
situation is bad in Argentina, so maybe the junior players don't get a chance
to travel and fulfil their talent. They don't have the opportunity. So maybe
if we keep winning we keep the door open for them to continue the career.
Q: Just before the French Open, you must have a lot of confidence now?
A: Yes, my confidence is very high right now, and when I get to Paris, I hope
that I'll be fighting during the later stages of the tournament. I just hope
I get there and play at the same level I've been playing during the last few
weeks I have a chance to do well. But so have a lot of other players. There,
every match is like a final, really.
Q: Although a Grand Slam is totally different, it's logical now looking at
your form to see you as a contender for the French Open?
A: Yes, but at the same time there are a lot of favourites for Roland Garros.
I know that if I play at the same level as in the last few weeks I have a
chance to do well. But so have a lot of other players. There, every match is
like a final, really.
Q: Since the haircut you got to the final in Monte Carlo and you won Hamburg.
I take it you are happy with it?
A: I'll never let it grow again. I cut my hair and then I started winning
matches.
Q: How much support did you receive from the Argentinian federation?
A: I can't really complain about the treatment I got from the Argentinian
tennis federation. Myself, Nalbandian and the other players that where born
in that year, we were helped by the federation to travel to all the junior
tournament. I wouldn't have made it without them. I won Roland Garros Juniors
title thanks to this travels, supported by the federation. I know that for
other players it was not the same thing. But for myself, I cannot complain.
What they would need to do right now is to have a tennis centre in Argentina
where the young players could practice. With the money coming in from the
Davis Cup and other things they should put it there to help the young upcoming
players to have a chance.
Q: You don't think you would be sitting here today if it wasn't for the help
of the federation?
A: It's would have been very difficult, because I come from a family that just
couldn't pay for all the travels to all the tournaments. If it wasn't for that
help I wouldn't have been able to start my career.
Q: What strucks a lot of people is the speed you have around the court. What
have you improved most over the last 2 years?
A: The concentration and the ability to fight until the last point. At the
same time I kept working on my speed around the court. And all the shots of
course,, because to win a tournament like this one you cannot make too many
unforced errors. You have to be very solid and you have to be ready both
mentally and physically. So you have to work on all those aspects.
Q: Can you tell us about the work with Alberto Mancini? What did change for
his game?
A: All the success I'm having now and the good results speak for themselves.
I have to thank Alberto and my physical trainer Jorge Trevisan who are working
very hard both on the court and off the court. I wish I had met him earlier in
career and not only working with him since this year. Alberto was a top 10
player, he won the Monte Carlo and Rome tournament, so he has the experience,
he has been there before, so he transmits this experience he had to me.
Q: After winning you celebrated the win with Agustin. What kind of
relationship do you have?
A: After the match I didn't know what to do. He was there and he is a really
good friend of mine. He really took the defeat very well and that shows you
how good a person he is. It just happened that I won the match today.
Q: What does it mean to you that you follow Vilas in winning this tournament?
He was the last ARgentinian to win this tournament.
A: It is very nice to follow in his footsteps in this tournament and be the
second Argentinian to win here. All of us, we're still very far from his
achievements. It's just great to be the second Argentinian to have won here in
Hamburg.
