Last Updated: Tuesday, 9 March, 2004, 20:25 GMT Kuerten quits Brazil team Former world number one Gustavo Kuerten has quit Brazil's Davis Cup team. Kuerten, who started playing for Brazil in 1996, is angry that the players were not consulted about Jaime Oncins' appointment as their new captain. The current world number nine says he will not compete in Brazil's forthcoming Americas Zone Group One fixture against Paraguay next month. "It was a tough decision but the players were not consulted on the venue or the change of captains," he said. Kuerten is also angry at what he sees as a failure of the Brazilian Tennis Confederation to develop the game and help players in the country. "I have Davis Cup in the blood, had great moments competing and I am sad to leave at this time," he added. "But, for Brazilian tennis and the future players, I had to choose this way seeing that the current administration has made little effort to develop tennis and help the young players. "When we win, we players are praised. When we lose, as we did against Canada last year, we take the blame, not the federation." Kuerten, who has won the French Open three times, has now left for America to play at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 203.219.101.22
