Everything to prove
Both Andy Roddick and Guillermo Coria, Sunday's Miami Masters finalists have
something to prove. For last year's world champion it is to prove he remains
the best in the game, while 22-year-old Coria yearns to prove he is more than
just a clay-court specialist.
Roddick has a men's tour-best 25 wins for the season, including a San Jose
title to his name, but since ending last season as the world's best player he
has struggled in the shadow of Roger Federer.
Having watches American legends Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and Michael Chang
win in Miami as a spectator the Nebraskan wants to etch his name on the Miami
trophy.
And this year's tournament provides as good a time as any.
"It would be great," Roddick said.
"I've been knocking on the door of a big result all year long."
In Coria, Roddick faces an opponent playing in only his second hard court final
.
The Argentine lost his first to Gustavo Kuerten at the Brazilian Open in 2002.
"The guy can play ball regardless of what surface," Roddick said.
"Obviously he feels most comfortable on clay but a lot of times it's getting
out of the gates on something."
While Coria won his seventh ATP title at the Argentine Open in February, his
sixth on a clay-court, Roddick knows there is more to his game than being good
at sliding on crushed brick.
"He's one of the fastest guys on tour. He doesn't give an inch," Roddick said.
"He has got great feet for the court. He gets out of so many situations with
his hands and playing the right shot at the right time.
"You can't say enough about someone who is a fighter. I'm going to have to go
beat him. He's not going to give me anything that's for sure."
Coria has forced himself into a more aggressive strategy which has proven to
have worked so far in the second Masters Series tournament of the year.
"I've been working more on attacking, getting to the net, keeping the points
shorter," Coria said.
"It's great to be in a final here in a big tournament like this on hard court,
but I still feel I need to improve day by day."
Coria lost both prior matches with Roddick, most recently last November in a
round-robin affair at the ATP Masters Cup in Houston. Coria led 3-1 in the
third set but Roddick took the final five games to win the hard court match.
"I would like to have revenge against Roddick," Coria said.
"He's going to have to win every point. I'm going to fight very hard every
point. Roddick is going to have to earn it."
Coria, is the first Argentine finalist here since Alberto Mancini in 1992 and
the first South American finalist since Kuerten in 2000.
