Master Roddick Claims Miami Crown
Second seed Andy Roddick captured his third career ATP Masters Series shield
after Argentina's Guillermo Coria retired from the best-of-five-set NASDAQ-100
Open final with the American leading 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-1.
Coria, the No. 3 seed, received treatment on a back injury at 5-6 in the
opening set, and despite winning the tie-break, could not continue as Roddick
powered through the next two sets.
Roddick, who claimed his first ATP match win in Miami in 2000 against Fernando
Vicente, celebrated his 200th ATP singles victory on the 20th anniversary of
the Miami tournament. With the win, the 21-year-old Roddick also became the
youngest Miami champion since Michael Chang in 1992.
Roddick, who moves up to second position in the INDESIT ATP 2004 Race after
earning 100 points, now has won three of the last four North American ATP
Masters Series shields (2003 Montreal, Cincinnati). He has a 3-1 record in ATP
Masters Series finals and has won his last eight ATP finals dating back to St.
Poelten in May last year.
It was the 13th career title and second of the year for Roddick, who captured
the Siebel Open in San Jose in February (d. Fish). He is now an ATP-best 26-5
in 2004.
With the victory, Roddick maintained his 100 percent record against Coria,
having won both of their previous meetings in Houston - in the semifinals of
the U.S. Clay Courts in 2002 and in a round robin match at the Tennis Masters
Cup last November (both in three sets).
En route to the title, Roddick defeated Karol Beck, Jonas Bjorkman, Guillermo
Canas, Carlos Moya and Vincent Spadea.
Coria, the reigning ATP Masters Series Hamburg champion, was attempting to
claim his first hard court title and first title in the United States. He
defeated Wayne Ferreira, Juan Ignacio Chela, Julien Benneteau, Nicolas Kiefer
and Fernando Gonzalez - saving four match points against the Chilean in the
semifinals.
By reaching the final, he became the first Argentine to reach the championship
match in Miami since former coach Alberto Mancini in 1992 when he lost to
Michael Chang, and was the first South American to reach the final since
Brazil's Gustavo Kuerten in 2000 (l. to Sampras). Marcelo Rios of Chile is the
only South American to win the Miami title in the tournament's 19-year history
(in 1998).
The final marked the first time since 1995 that two of the top three seeds had
reached the NASDAQ-100 Open final. That year, No. 2 Andre Agassi defeated No. 1
Pete Sampras.
Earlier in the tournament, Agassi's three-year reign in Miami was brought to
an end by Agustin Calleri in the fourth round a top seed Roger Federer suffered
just his second loss of the season against Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal in the
third round.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Roddick: "Any time you win on someone defaulting, I think you feel a little for
tunate. It's not the picture perfect ending, it's not the way you want to win a
tournament. But at the same time, I'm here at the end of the day. That was my
goal coming into the tournament.
"Once I realized he could stay in rallies and play okay, then midway through
the second set I just tried to forget about it and I just said, 'Okay, I'm just
going to try to imagine that he's not hurt at all.' That started working a
little bit better for me.
"I think I just let my patience go out the door [in the third set]. I mean, I
don't think I committed to a game plan in the first set. At one point I tried
to play consistent and rally with him. The next point, I just tried for
something. I was like, 'Okay, either we're going to commit to being aggressive
or we're gonna commit to a grind session.' At that point, aggressive sounded
a lot more fun than grinding out every point.
"He was playing at a very high level. He was making me have to hit my shots and
convert points. I was just struggling to do that in the first set. He was
almost like a human backboard out there. It was tough to get momentum. I was
kind of playing one point well, one point not well. After a while you start
thinking about it when he makes that many balls. He was playing very well.
"This tournament was just really good for me. I had been talking to you guys
for the last, probably three or four weeks about how I needed a big result to
kind of put my stamp on this year so far. And so this tournament is kind of
exactly what I was looking for."
Coria: "At 4-5, when I served at 15-love, when I came down, the whole left side
of the back stiffened up. It came from nothing, because I was feeling great up
to that point.
"At the beginning, it was just the serve. Then as I progressed, it started hurt
ing on every side - sitting down, standing up. I knew it was very difficult to
play Roddick feeling this way. When I served, I had to go up to stretch to get
to the ball, and that made things even harder for me.
"I believe I should have retired after the first set, but nobody wants to
retire in a final with all the people that paid the money to come see me play.
I knew that I probably couldn't go through. I knew against Roddick, it would be
very tough. But I didn't want to retire then so...I knew I should [have
retired] in the first set, after the first set.
"I was very upset, very sad. To get injured in a final in a big tournament like
this, which it was a dream for me to get to the final, it was very upsetting.
I hope to have a chance to get back and get to a final like this again."
