Press Conference with GUILLERMO CORIA
Federer vs. Coria 4:6 6:4 6:2 6:3
Q: You were a set up and nearly a break up in the second set. It looked as if
you would get on top. Why did that not happen?
CORIA: I started on a very high level. In the second set, he broke my serve but
I got the rebreak immediately. At 4:5, he won the first ball, which was very
important because it gave him the chance to win the set and his confidence got
much higher after winning it.
The difference was that Federer was physically on a higher level. That’s what
made him win the match.
Q: What was exactly the problem, a usual blister?
CORIA: Yes, the blister broke and I couldn’t grab the racket right.
Q: When did it happen?
CORIA: In the first game of the third set.
Q: How do you feel? Are you very disappointed?
CORIA: I’m a bit sad because the final is the only match you’re not supposed
to lose.
The matches I played before this final went against me a little because they
were pretty long. But I am very happy because a week ago I had an abdominal
injury.
Q: What sort of injury, muscle?
CORIA: Yes, muscle.
Q: Do you still feel the injury?
CORIA: No.
Q: If there was a world ranking based on the clay court results, what would
it look like at the top?
CORIA: The ranking doesn’t actually exist and I had very hard matches to get
to that 31 winning streak. But, I would see myself up there like I feel now.
Q: Do you consider yourself as a favourite for Paris?
CORIA: I actually never see myself as a favourite. I just go to the match and
the most important for me is to win each match.
Q: Are you surprised about the way Roger plays on clay now?
CORIA: His level is very high. He’s the No. 1 in the world and he has won
three Masters. So, you can’t say that I was surprised about Federer’s game.
Q: What are you planning to do between now and Paris?
CORIA: I will leave for Paris tomorrow in order to prepare myself for
Roland Garros.
Q: How long will it be to recover from the blister?
CORIA: 2 days.
Q: And your stomach, is it o.k?
CORIA: Yesterday it hurt a little. I felt something but it didn’t affect my
game today. I had to come back to my old serve. I had to change my serve
today because I was afraid to get injured again.
Q: What did you change? Did you put less spin on it?
CORIA: I just changed the movement of the serve.
Q: Compared to last year when you won here, would you consider yourself a
different player?
CORIA: Because of my results, I have been winning confidence and experience
through all these matches.
Q: You wouldn’t lose the semi-final against Verkerk?
CORIA: No, I hope to win the tournament.
