Day 3 - Guillermo Coria interview
Wednesday, May 26, 2004
Q. In the next round, you'll play either Ancic or Zabaleta. It seems your
draw sends you through half of the Argentine players. Does this make it
easier for you or is it more difficult?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, Zabaleta would have to win the match first. Of course,
he's a player I know very well. Last year I played against him here, and I
played against him on other occasions in the past, so I know sometimes it's
better to play someone you know. I've never played Ancic before, but I know
him, I know his game.
I think my main worry is to improve my tennis and think about my own game and
build up my tactics.
Q. How would you compare how you played today versus how you played the other
day?
GUILLERMO CORIA: I think during my first match, I was playing better and
better. The weather was a bit different. The ground was heavier. Monaco has
been playing very well. He's had a very aggressive game. He went up to the
net. He made some good shots. I think I didn't play deep enough. When I
started to do that, I started to open up on his right, and I felt better.
But it was a difficult match. But still I think that I was feeling better
against Davydenko.
Q. What do you have to do mentally to prepare yourself to go all the way to
the end of the next week?
GUILLERMO CORIA: I think I have to prepare myself mentally as best I can. I
do feel well on court. This was a good match today. I was prepared,
well-prepared. I knew it would be a long match. I know this will be a long
tournament. You've got to be prepared for long matches, you've got to be
well-prepared mentally.
Every time I start a match, I try to be strong and ready to play a long
match. I don't think there is a special method to be mentally.
Q. Any different feeling this year, because you come in here as one of the
favorites, than last year? While you played very well and reached the
semifinals, you weren't expected to go far?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Last year I got to the semifinals. As I've said before, I
think all the players feel that they're a favorite. I think they all want to
win such a great tournament.
I came here last year with a lot of confidence, the same as this year. So I
reached the semifinal last year, and this was a good experience. I hope this
year I can improve my game day after day, continue to play as I have played
up to this day, to be relaxed and not think about being the favorite, but to
improve my game day to day. I know there are difficult matches ahead, and
everyone is here to win, as I am.
THE MODERATOR: Questions in Spanish, please.
Q. Beyond the game, are you fit physically, no blisters, no abdominal pain,
anything?
GUILLERMO CORIA: I'm perfect (smiling). I have finished a bit tired. I was
ready to continue playing. We run a lot with Juan. Apart from the fact that
I was a little bit tired, I am strong. But in a long match, it's not like a
short match, you know, run after every ball. Sometimes you have to be smart
enough not to run after an impossible shot.
This is what I did today, in the second set in particular. When he sort of
slowed down, I was strong. And in the third set, he attacked again, and I
responded. I'm very happy because I finished in 2 hours, 20 minutes, I think.
I finished the match very well, and I'm playing well.
Q. In the third set, you had serving difficulties. Did you change anything
there?
GUILLERMO CORIA: No. I was a little bit in pain. I was trying to play towards
the right side. Against Davydenko, I had a better percentage with my first
serve. In this match, I was confident about my serve. I didn't change
anything. I didn't see the statistics, but I don't feel that I served badly.
Q. You always beat the Argentinians. What do you think about that?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, on clay I've won a few good matches, including against
players who are not Argentinian. It's true that I've been lucky playing
against Argentinians. I think whoever I'm playing - Argentinian, French,
Spanish - I play the same. I do my best preparation and I try to play every
shot.
Q. After a beginning with 1-4, you had difficulty, then you started to
recover. When did you feel that you were dominating the match?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, I knew that it would be a difficult beginning to the
match, that he would give everything he had. He's a player who gives
everything he has on each point. On the break, when I made a double-fault,
that was an unforced error, silly mistake. It was at Love-40. Of course, the
following point could have made a major difference.
But after that, I had a breakpoint, and I didn't manage to convert. But I
never completely felt that I was entirely dominating the match. I was
thinking about correcting my mistakes, correcting my errors, and trying to
play to his forehand rather than his backhand. When I did start changing the
tactics, I started playing to his right side.
I knew that winning the first set would be very important. In the end, it was
a success.
