Canas vows to fight doping ban
Canas vows to fight doping ban
August 9, 2005
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- Argentine tennis star
Guillermo Canas promises to fight a two-year suspension by
the ATP for testing positive for a diuretic.
Canas, ranked No. 10 and a French Open quarterfinalist this
year, said he never knowingly ingested a banned substance.
He plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in
Switzerland.
``I know I'm innocent,'' Canas told the Argentine newspaper
La Nacion. ``My career isn't going to end, that's for
sure.''
Canas, winner of six ATP tour events in his career, tested
positive in February at the Mexican Open in Acapulco.
Diuretics increase urine production and are used to treat
patients with renal problems. They also are misused to mask
the presence of other banned substances such as steroids.
Canas has not played since reaching the semifinals of the
Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany in June. He withdrew
from consideration for Argentina's Davis Cup quarterfinal
in July against Australia because of the doping
investigation.
An independent Tennis Anti-Doping Program tribunal heard
Canas' appeal in July. The panel confirmed the test
results, ordered him to repay $276,070 in prize money and
deducted singles and doubles rankings points. He is
eligible to return to tennis on June 11, 2007, the ATP
said.
Canas entered the ATP's top 10 this year after recovering
from injuries. In 2003, he was sidelined for eight months
by a hand injury.
