February 21, 2005 Bovina, Suarez Make Season Debuts In Qatar DOHA, Qatar - Day 1 of the $600,000 Qatar Total Open saw two players make their first appearances of 2005 after injuries delayed the start of their seasons. While Russian Elena Bovina made a successful return to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, Argentina's Paola Suarez didn't fare so well. No.6-seeded Bovina, who missed the first seven weeks of the year with a left foot injury, advanced with a hard-fought win over Shinobu Asagoe of Japan, 75 76(6). Games went with serve through the first 11 games of the match before the big-serving Bovina broke the 2004 US Open quarterfinalist to take the first set. The second set was even closer, with a tie-break needed to settle matters. Bovina led 6-4 only to see Asagoe save two match points, but the Russian prevented a third set by winning the next two points. Bovina meets the winner of Tuesday's encounter between Daniela Hantuchova and Magdalena Maleeva. Suarez, who missed the Australian swing with a leg injury, was seeded No.8 here but her lack of match practice was evident in her 61 61 loss to France's Marion Bartoli. Bartoli has been in fine form so far this year, reaching the semifinals at Auckland and the quarters at Canberra and Paris [Indoors]. Bartoli meets Jelena Kostanic for a quarterfinal berth after the Croatian left-hander came from behind to defeat Italian Maria Elena Camerin 36 75 63. Seventeen-year-old Ana Ivanovic continues to impress in the early stages of her fledgling career, overpowering Maria Vento-Kabchi, 61 60. The Serbian wildcard set up a second-round meeting with top seed and last week's Antwerp champion Amelie Mauresmo, hoping to avenge her 62 75 loss to the Frenchwoman at the Australian Open last month. In an all-Italian first-round battle, Francesca Schiavone upstaged No.7 seed Silvia Farina Elia, 61 63. Other top seeds featuring in this week's Tier II event are Maria Sharapova (No.2), Anastasia Myskina (No.3) and Alicia Molik (No.4). -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 218.167.111.204
