Gaudio and Coria caught up in war of words Fri May 20, 2005 1:28 PM BST By Pritha Sarkar DUESSELDORF, Germany, May 20 (Reuters) - A spat between Argentina's top two players is threatening to overshadow the country's success at the World Team Cup this week. French Open champion Gaston Gaudio criticised Guillermo Coria's decision to sit out a singles match in their 3-0 win over holders Chile on Thursday. "If you come here you have to win. I'm fed up. Let's be truthful, this isn't a team, because there's someone who makes decisions choosing the best for himself," Gaudio told reporters after defeating Fernando Gonzalez. With the French Open beginning next Monday, both players had agreed to play two singles matches -- out of the three they could have contested -- during the round-robin stage of the competition at the Rochusclub. "I can understand that a player gets tired and decides to rest before Paris," added Gaudio. "I also did so on Tuesday against the Czechs but not in the most important match of all. "Coria and I were the best team and if we were a real team this wouldn't have happened." In Coria's absence, world number 10 Guillermo Canas stepped into the fray, even though he was not feeling 100 percent. "I've had a bit of a fever for two days but Guillermo (Coria) said he couldn't play so I went out there," said Canas, who was stretched to three sets by Nicolas Massu. "I originally did not want to play but Guillermo said he felt worse than me. I'm taking antibiotics and I cannot play in the final on Saturday." Coria, runner-up to Gaudio in last year's French Open, refused to apologise for opting to play in the doubles with Juan Ignacio Chela on Thursday. FOUR PLAYERS Despite Gaudio's anger, Coria felt he had a right get some rest ahead of the claycourt grand slam. "I wasn't 100 percent in condition to play because I've been playing a lot of matches and that's why we formed a team of four singles players," said Coria. "We discussed this (on Wednesday) with Canas and Chela. Guillermo (Canas) told me it didn't matter, he asked me to play, I explained to him that I didn't feel good and the team understood." Asked about Gaudio's reaction to the decision, Coria replied: "Gaston? He was training and so didn't take part (in the conversation)." Coria underwent shoulder surgery last August and has been wary of putting too much pressure on his body ahead of the French slam. However, he said he wanted to draw a line under the episode and concentrate his efforts on Argentina's bid to reclaim the Duesseldorf title they last won in 2002. "I haven't got any problems with Gaston, we respect (each other), everyone knows we're not friends, but we still have a good enough team to win here," said the world number nine. "If I thought only about myself I'd have stayed in Barcelona or gone directly to Roland Garros. It's better to arrange things face-to-face and not say them to the press." c Reuters 2005.
