Day 1 - Gaston Gaudio Interview
Monday, May 23, 2005
Q. Can you tell us about your match?
GASTON GAUDIO: Well, it was difficult at first. For the last year, everybody
has been asking questions. There's so much pressure being put on me. The
expectations are so high from the outset that I was very nervous at the
beginning and I didn't play very well. Then things got better and I ended up
playing rather well.
Q. You were playing against a Frenchman, so the pressure was even greater,
wasn't it, because of the crowd?
GASTON GAUDIO: No, not because of the crowd. It's because everybody says,
"What do you feel? What do you feel being back? What goes through your head?"
The expectations, it puts a lot of pressure. For me, it was an ordinary
match, I feel like. It's the measure that other people put on me. It makes me
nervous.
Q. What happened at the beginning?
GASTON GAUDIO: Well, there was a breakpoint, passing shot. I hit the ball,
then he hit it back and it was in. I don't think that really affected things.
I don't think he really had any ill intention really.
Q. At the end you relaxed. Winning the first set was important for you?
GASTON GAUDIO: Yes, it was important, because after that I started playing a
little better, after I won the first set. Then I started relaxing a little
bit and I started playing better.
Q. Do you feel different being here as compared to last year on center court?
Is it different when you come here as a champion? Did you think, "I'm the
champion of Roland Garros" when you arrived on the court?
GASTON GAUDIO: No, I didn't really think about that. It's the first match,
you know. The first match is difficult. As I said, the expectations are high.
Really, that's what worried me.
You know, I didn't go on the court saying, "I'm the champion here." No, not
at all.
Q. Once you won the first set, once you started relaxing, how did you feel?
Did you feel better? Did you feel different?
GASTON GAUDIO: No, I started playing better tennis. I started regaining my
confidence. Things started improving. I started feeling more comfortable.
That's about it.
Q. You maybe had to play this match so people stopped asking you about how
you feel. It's the first stage you need to overcome.
GASTON GAUDIO: Yes, of course, you need to win the first match, whatever the
circumstances. I might be more relaxed now. In fact, I was more relaxed
during the middle of the match. I think that that really makes me feel more
comfortable for the next match.
Q. And the people?
GASTON GAUDIO: About the people? Everything was fine.
Q. What about your outfit?
GASTON GAUDIO: There's nothing special about it.
Q. But what about Uruguay?
GASTON GAUDIO: No.
Q. How did you feel physically, compared to last year?
GASTON GAUDIO: Fine. I felt well last year. I was feeling fine. I was feeling
fit. This year, well, I feel fine as well physically.
