Day 4 - Guillermo Coria Interview Thursday, May 26, 2005 GUILLERMO CORIA: (Translated from Spanish) He started very fast. He was playing very high balls. I was a little bit surprised at his speed at the beginning of the match. It's very difficult to play someone you don't know very well. Of course, I knew it was going to be difficult for him to hold out like that for five sets. I think he's got a big future today. Q. Humid today like Florida. Did you have any difficulties at all on the court with the weather, the humidity? GUILLERMO CORIA: (Translated from Spanish) No, not really. Maybe he didn't like the weather so much. Obviously, he was tired after a while. I've been working a lot the past few weeks to really be fit. Obviously when you're fit, you should be able to play a long match in hot weather. THE MODERATOR: Questions in Spanish. Q. He seemed a little bit unsettled. You didn't look like you were having a very good day during the first two sets. GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, I think I was feeling as usual. It's true that at one point I didn't feel that I was playing very well. I wasn't at ease. It's true that it's difficult to play against someone you don't know very well and who starts so strong ? 190 he was serving on some occasions. You can see that your opponent has nothing to lose. Obviously, that means that you have to worry about it a little bit, pay attention. But I think I'm quite happy with the way I managed it. Q. He was also managing his match. The match was going up and down all the time. He was controlling really. GUILLERMO CORIA: Yes, 3?0, two breaks, long exchanges. He was trying to do everything. He was moving me around the court. After that, he came back into the match and was playing very well. Then later he started playing more slowly. It's very, very difficult to play like that. Q. You had a very high percentage of double?faults. Does that have anything to do with the shoulder? GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, no. He returns very well. Of course, you take risks. During my first match, I was serving very well, and today I didn't serve so well. But, obviously, it's a bigger court on central court so you need to adapt a little bit. Now I'm sure I'm going to improve on that point. Q. You're talking about center court. Were you thinking about going back there? GUILLERMO CORIA: No, I wasn't thinking about it at all. I can't change what happened. It was the same place. For the moment, things are going as well as last year. I quite like that. That was center court, it was a difficult match. Last year I had a similar match against Monaco. I had an unknown opponent. It took me some time to manage to get around his game. But I wasn't worried. Q. You said it's very difficult to play such an opponent who serves very well. Is it also to difficult play against someone who leaves the court twice and then comes back? GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, this is his first Grand Slam. I'm sure he didn't mean anything by it. Q. But that's why I ask you the question. GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, it's true that he took his time between points, and then he served very well. He was running around like a rabbit, playing very fast, and that's difficult. For everything else, I mean, obviously you need to remain concentrated on what you need to do and not relax, because otherwise you don't get back into it. Q. What were you looking at on the court? GUILLERMO CORIA: In fact, the problem is that I had the sun in my face, and it was reflecting on some of the jewelry and I couldn't see very well. It was bothering me. Q. A number of players have said the balls are very heavy compared to last year. Is it different today? GUILLERMO CORIA: I think they're more or less the same. It's, in fact, a bit strange because they are quite heavy, but they have the same feel as last year really. Q. In the media, they talk a lot about Nadal and a little bit of Federer, possibly a little bit about Gasquet until the next match. What do you feel about this? GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, it's all the better. I mean, if you look at Nadal's results this season, obviously he's a favorite, even if maybe he doesn't want to recognize that. He's been playing very well. Obviously, you also have Federer. Canas I think and Puerta are also playing very well. I'm sure they're going to cause a lot of problems for their opponents. Q. Another Guillermo, Vilas, said if it's very hot, Federer will win. What do you think about that? GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, that's up to him. He was a very great player. If he says that, then probably there's something to be said about it. I mean, he's been playing very well. I haven't seen him play, but there's still a long way to go. Q. What about Melzer? GUILLERMO CORIA: I don't know him very well. I didn't play against him. I've never seen him play. I've seen images of when he played Agassi last year. I think it's going to be a difficult match. He's left?handed with not much rhythm. I think I'll have to bring my level of game up a bit Q. Another great legend of tennis, McEnroe, said that if Federer and Nadal are on the same side of the draw, you might get the title. GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, I hope to get to the final, but I'll have to really play better if I want to win this tournament. I'm not playing as well as I was playing a moment ago, in Rome in particular. All the matches I'm going to play are going to be difficult. Q. Is it an advantage to have played less, you've been able to rest? GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, it helps. If you have a long, tough match, you start to get nervous; it's very hot. I think in any case it doesn't make much difference at that point, you have to be ready to play long hours. Today I went on court feeling it could be a very long match and I wasn't thinking about the following matches. I take it a match at a time. Obviously, it's better not to spend too long on the court. Q. In France there's a lot of discussion about the match tomorrow between Nadal and Gasquet. What do you think about that match tomorrow? GUILLERMO CORIA: I think the one who gets less nervous will win. In Monte?Carlo, it was extremely close. It was going Gasquet's way. In the end, Nadal managed to win it. It was experience; it was confidence. But Gasquet has been getting good results since then. We'll have to see how he deals with the pressure. I think the first two sets will be very intense and then anything can happen. If Gasquet plays really well, he can be a real problem for Nadal because he plays a very good backhand. It's going to be very difficult. This is a Grand Slam tournament. They both have a lot of pressure. We'll see. Q. (No microphone.) GUILLERMO CORIA: In bed I'll be quiet watching them run around (smiling). A lot of people have watched me running around, now I'll watch them. Q. Tomorrow we have another important match, Federer/Fernando. He has a possibility to win, do you think? What does he need to do? GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, it all depends on Fernando's missiles. It's going to be a long match. You don't need to say anything about Federer. Fernando has a good game. If he manages to hold out through a long match, if he has a high percentage of winners, he could win. Again, in Monte?Carlo, it was extremely close. Q. (No microphone.) GUILLERMO CORIA: Federer probably has the advantage. Q. Yourself in terms of Nadal and Federer, it would be of course convenient for you if they were both out? GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, obviously. But I need to get through, as well. It's important for great players to know that great players are out. But I'm not thinking about everything else losing; I'm thinking about how I can improve my game and win the next match. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 61.229.43.115
