Day 8 - Gaston Gaudio Interview
Day 8 - Gaston Gaudio Interview
Monday, May 30, 2005
Q. What happened in that fifth set? You were in such a good position.
GASTON GAUDIO: Yes, I know. I was 4-Love and I was like almost there, but
I couldn't. I don't know what happened. He started to play a little bit
better. I got too nervous, I guess. And then after that I couldn't do
anything. He was playing better than me.
Q. Was there any particular shot where you thought, "If I got that shot,"
it would have all been over for him?
GASTON GAUDIO: Well, when I was serving 4-3, I don't know how many times I
have, like, three or four points to get 5-3, and I didn't take the
opportunity. I think then after that, mentally, I was like out of the game.
Q. How disappointed are you to go out like that in the fifth set, the match
which looked to be going your way?
GASTON GAUDIO: Always lose is disappointing, I mean. But it's a pity that I
lose here in the French Open. It's a lovely tournament and I would love to
stay here, but anyway...
Losing like this is even worst (sic).
Q. Have you enjoyed being the French Open champion? What kind of difference
has it made over the year? Have people been coming up to you and saying,
"Well done last year," and things like that?
GASTON GAUDIO: Yeah, was pretty good. Was really good, yeah.
THE MODERATOR: Spanish questions, please.
Q. Tell us a little bit about how you felt during this match. We saw that
there were a lot of changes in your attitude, in what you were saying. And
after 4-Love, what did you feel? What happened after that?
GASTON GAUDIO: Well, it's true that it was a match that changed a lot. It was
an extremely difficult match, which is what was expected.
I had my opportunity at 4-Love in the fifth set, and I didn't take it. And
after that, I still had a few points which could have made me win that match
and I didn't take them. And he played better and eventually won.
Q. There wasn't that much tension during this match, but during the first
set, everything went well. And after, that we started to feel that you
weren't really with it. After a set and a half, how can so many things
change? I mean, so many things have changed over the last year.
GASTON GAUDIO: Well, since I've started this tournament, I haven't always
felt that I've been playing very well. I could see it coming. I knew that
if I continued playing like that, I wouldn't be able to win again.
So I fought as much as I could. I had a number of opportunities, and I
didn't take them. Obviously, he used every single chance. And when I was
up 4-Love, he used all opportunities, and he did the right thing.
Q. You said to Ferrer's coach at one point, "Don't worry; I'm not going
to win today." Why did you say that?
GASTON GAUDIO: Well, I don't know. I could see that I wasn't playing well
and there was no way I was going to get out of it playing like that.
After that, the situation was a little bit changed. I had a number of
opportunities. The thing is, I wasn't able to take those chances.
Q. Could you tell us a little bit more about the umpire, the point in the
tiebreak and the foot fault.
GASTON GAUDIO: Don't think there's anything to say.
Q. You've said that you didn't feel well from the beginning of the tournament.
Last year, when you got to the quarterfinals, semifinals, was it an entirely
different feeling? Did you have the feeling that you were playing very well?
Could you compare the two situations?
GASTON GAUDIO: I was feeling much better last year from the very beginning of
the tournament as compared to this year - technically, in my mind, from all
points of view.
Q. Obviously, you didn't want to lose, but since you won this tournament last
year, you've had a number of questions on how you were going to defend this
title. Now, do you feel a little bit more relaxed because people are going
to stop asking you this question?
GASTON GAUDIO: Well, yes. From a certain point of view, you could say that.
Q. From the outside, your game has ups and downs. It's as if you suddenly
short-circuited and then all of a sudden you're with it again and you're
playing brilliant tennis. Does this correspond to differences in your
level of confidence?
GASTON GAUDIO: I think that it is related to confidence. When you're
confident, your game is much better, much more regular. And then when
you're in an important moment or in a critical situation, that's where
things appear quite clearly whether you're feeling well or not.
Even when I was 4-Love, I was feeling today that it wasn't going to be a
good day; I wasn't seeing things very clearly.
Q. If you saw the tape of the match today, what do you think you'd do
differently?
GASTON GAUDIO: Everything.
Q. Not the first set, surely.
GASTON GAUDIO: Yes, but that first set, I don't really know. I think I'd have
to improve my level a great deal. I mean, I don't know if you could see it
coming, but personally, I didn't feel well at all. I came very close because
I wanted really to win this match.
But apart from that, I don't think that I've been playing a good game.
Q. How do you feel now after losing in this tournament? What are you going
to do next?
GASTON GAUDIO: Well, I feel all right because quite honestly I knew it was
going to happen. I didn't think I was going to win it again (laughing).
Q. Last year you didn't play Wimbledon. Are you going to try to prepare this
year for Wimbledon?
GASTON GAUDIO: Well, quite honestly, I haven't been thinking about that yet.
I've lost just a couple of hours ago and I haven't started thinking about the
season on grass.
Q. Have you been talking about this match with Franco?
GASTON GAUDIO: No.
Q. What have you been doing since you lost the match?
GASTON GAUDIO: Shower, meal, telephone call, nothing else.
